Re: how to get that metallic sound like mantis/exude?
Try the free plugin here called flanger box: http://www.synthescience.com/Products_E ... ation.html
It's a flanger which can shape some really metallic sounds!

I think all the functions in sytrus alone do a pretty good job, but that's just my opinion. In sytrus you can add formants and harmonics in the osc section of each operator. If you modulate your operators correctly you can get the sound. Also if you change the sine wave to a triangle wave in all of the operators it gets really sharp and metallic sounding. Oh and disable the smooth tab on the main interface, that helps a lot. That probably still wasn't detailed enough for you but I hope the tips can help you along a little. Unless you already knew all this and my post was totally unnecessary ha ha.R3b_Official wrote:TheOcularInvisible wrote:You can make this sort of bass using an FM synth and a multi band distortion.
Another way to achieve this metallic effect is with a resonator. It's basically a series of very short delays that you can tune to a specific pitch .
No to be funny but I hear everyone saying this over and over but not giving a good description. I have yet to see anyone post an example and how it was made in fm such as fm8 and sytrus and then adding trash over it and not over killing the sound.

For great FM tutorials check out seamlessR on youtube. He's the shit!!! The tutorials are called, how to bass. He has a shit load of killer ideas.
Re: how to get that metallic sound like mantis/exude?
Seamless is a good guy but his tutorials get kind of repetitive don't you think? The resampling thing he did can be done just by watching on vid and his FM stuff is just opening sytrus and making a vowel patch then running through a vocoder. Which brought to my attention that he might be running out of stuff to do, so I personally think that he should try making more tutorials on 3rd party vsts and use some freeware to ease stuff a bit.Devilsindub wrote:For great FM tutorials check out seamlessR on youtube. That was pretty helpful! Will try some stuff out thus weekend. Being back at school gets kinda crazy and producing is something I do on the side. I'll try some of that stuff out on fm8 basically samething as sytrus.
I know for a fact exude uses just massive and no after fxs for his basses and so does getter. It's really raspy and mettalic and it's from the phaser in the modulation tab. He posted a vid on it on his facebook page. Besides his signature bass, all his songs are boring Tbh and all lie in the same structure and he doesn't do any resampling. I don't think you could do that sort of stuff on a bass like that since the harmonics will be all over the show and trying to add other fxs will distort the sound pretty bad....

Yeah I agree that he gets repetitive in his vids. In his defense I think he's just elaborating more on a previous how to bass. He's definitely not someone to watch if you're just starting out too. I'm not referring to you or anyone else in the thread btw just making an observation. He actually posted a tutorial on FM8 recently which I thought was pretty cool. Yet, I do agree that he should do more third party tutorials though. The FM8 tutorial might be the start of more to come. Crossing my fingers on that one.LogiSpark wrote:Seamless is a good guy but his tutorials get kind of repetitive don't you think? Yeah bro FM8 is pretty awesome. I'm used to the sytrus interface so using FM8 is a little more confusing to me but I think I'm getting the hang of it. I agree with you about his signature bass. If you tried to resample or add distortions it would probably thin it out or make it way to sharp in some areas.R3b_Official wrote:Devilsindub wrote:I think all the functions in sytrus alone do a pretty good job, but that's just my opinion. You can always EQ down the peaks, and boost in areas where it got cut, or even layer a resampled/distorted version on top.Devilsindub wrote:Yeah bro FM8 is pretty awesome. Re: how to get that metallic sound like mantis/exude?
Good point my friend. If you take your time with it you can get to sound good.
Re: how to get that metallic sound like mantis/exude?
I personally find that messing with the reverb settings in Massive are a good substitute for fucking with the delay. Here are the settings I made for a patch that give it a metallic-y feel:

I make music, and I came here to discuss it. If you want to hit me up on skype, its jimbo_tulpa_slice, and my FB is Logan Patchwirk Winterhelt.
Also, why do people always put Skrillex and deadmau5 together and think it would be awesome, it wouldn't.

I think the comb filter makes a much more metallic sound.Patchwirk wrote:I personally find that messing with the reverb settings in Massive are a good substitute for fucking with the delay. Here are the settings I made for a patch that give it a metallic-y feel:

On my soundcloud, I have a mettalic reese.

This was done with a delay and a comb filter with a flanger running in parallel.
