Dont fuck the snare, Dont play the snare with an axe and record the snare with a 57 becuase everyone does and it sounds fine, although that hypercardioid beyer mic is well nice too.

About those 150-250Hz snares… I usually layer 909 with high passed acoustic snare and something with snappy transient. Instead of adding shit loads of eq boosts and compression, I prefer making sharp cuts around the fundamental frequency to take off most of the useless stuff that just mask the real punch of the snare. I guess this is one of the tricks that artists like Knife Party use to get their drums punchy (least at some point), but not horribly distorted when track is mastered to something like -3.5dB RMS

Then… there is amazing shit like this:



Along with recording clicks, cracks, and pops from real environment + layering, is there any tips for this kind of stuff?

Hmm well its a super obvious, and simple trick but it is super important! Be sure to boost your eq for your snare a little bit at around 150-250Hz to add that punch to it. Also try taking out a little bit in that frequency range, for your other sounds that are occupying some of that space (IF that space is not making a big impact on your sound), to leave room for the snare so it comes through really nice and clean.

For snares I layer 2 or 3 together that sit well, usually 2 dry snares then one clap or a wet sounding snare. EQ out all the bottom end usually around 100hz. Another thing you could try is get your initial snare sound then trim it so you just have the initial attack transient open up an enveloper (I use logic) then increase the attack gain so you get a popping sound turn this down and layer it with the snare adds to the weight.
