I think it would struggle RAM wise, i'd like to think the quad core would hold up.Simulant wrote:Try some new synths, like Lush 101 or U-He Diva, see how your ancient PC runs then.webstarr wrote:Struggling to see how your current machine isn't up to the task, i manage fine on a seven year old 32 bit windows XP PC.
OP: Why do you need that many instances of a synth running at once? Why not bounce them to audio and leave the original in the project but disabled so it's there if you need to go back to it.

Core 2 quads didn't come out until 2007, so which quad core do you have? I had a 2008 Core 2 Duo and it struggled with Diva on its highest settings, same with Lush. Like I said, download the demos and then post your results, perhaps then you'll see why people buy new computers.webstarr wrote:I think it would struggle RAM wise, i'd like to think the quad core would hold up.
Of course, if you only run older programs then an older computer is fine.

Yeah I haven't built a hackintosh myself either so I don't know about what current models are supported. It's at least something I'd look into. Worst case scenario I'd probably just forgo OSX and run windows and use all the extra money on production gear like controllers and monitoring. (unless of course you really need Logic or some other mac only program)
Alienwares have a good reputation but I've heard they're not the same since being bought by Dell. Make sure you're looking at a recent article as well since the new OSX might require different hardware.
Also not all quad cores are created equal. There's more at play than just cores and clock speed.
Something like Diva wouldn't really stress ram at all really. It'd be mostly CPU. I wonder if we'll be running DSP on graphics cards soon.

You could possibly try a solid state drive & maxing the memory on your current MBP.
Otherwise - yeh just get what you can afford.
You could go down the hacktintosh route but it can be a pain in the arse...... my old quad hackintosh is still solid as fuck though & you can fall back on windows if all fails...............
I get the most stuff done on a macbook pro tho as personal preference.
Its also worth geekbenching your current macbook & doing the same with the new one in the shop (a 2013 MBP was almost double my hackintosh geekbench score so I knew that was more than enough grunt for me).

Did post about this already you must have missed it. It was the about price and I just found the AMD build quickly. I could find a Intel build for around the same price.mromgwtf wrote:Not only he wants a laptop, you compare an intel cpu to an amd cpu, bolding the fact that AMD has 3.8 ghz, where intel cpu destroys it anyway in performance.bassbum wrote:This isnt about Windows v MacOS this is about the hardware specs. The PC bellow is better(for production) and look at the prices. If you have your heart set on mac software I would say build a hackingtosh. Then you can have MacOS on PC hardware.
Mac - 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with 8GB Ram - £1,749 (taken from the apple website)
PC - 3.8GHz CPU AMD X4 Raid with 8GB Ram - £408.97 (taken from bellow link)
(http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... catid=2475)
But if you are happy to pay £1,749 for less than a £408 PC then you do that.
All that aside. I have a "3.6ghz i5 650 and 6GB Ram" right now and I have projects with around 120-170 tracks before I hit the CPU wall (depending on what I have on each track.)
He said he wants a laptop for producing. What makes a laptop good for producing is how good the hardware is. Apple hardware is around 2 times (give or take) the price of most other places.
Personally I wouldnt have bothered with the best spec apple you can buy today a few years ago no matter the price. They just don't have the power.
