It used to mean things like an animal rights protester having their throat ripped out by a rabbit or a gambling addict getting murdered due to one killer betting another that they wouldn't do it. No, in this context, people stupid attempt to adopt a stupid look which makes them look even more stupid because they have found a look that matches their intellect, only they think by doing so has the reverse effect.
