I seriously don't think that they realize this until years if not decades later.

What would you do if you had a million dollars, Lawrence?

Two chicks at the same time man.

So if you had a million dollars all you would do is two chicks at the same time?

Shit yes. Always wanted to do that!

You gotta finish it!

Peter Gibbons: That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time?
Lawrence: Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money.
Peter Gibbons: Well, not all chicks.
Lawrence: Well, the type of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.

Oh, and I do use it as they intended it: as a background instrument. Mostly. Mostly 808 kicks behind tops kicks. Or not.

Not following that link, but, I don't think they need to worry. The elektron will be $4200. I expect Roland to come in under that.

Thats very true, they are certainly going after different markets. Regardless, thought people might be interested. Vid should be embedded now if you want to watch. Just a 30 second teaser. It doesnt say analog drum machine specifically, but a few people on the interwebs told me that analog drum machine is the word around the campfire...

Probably just a new drum machine, not a reissue of 808.
Hope it's something similar though, 808s seem really fun to play with.

Roland’s forthcoming remake of its beloved TR-808 drum machine looks set to be a “virtual analogue” synth rather than an analogue machine.

CreateDigitalMusic reports that the new Roland Aira-808 will use digital models to emulate the sound of its predecessor, citing a Dutch retailer that later removed the information from its website.

The same website also suggests that the drum machine uses Roland’s SuperNATURAL technology, the company’s latest generation of emulated analogue gear. Dive into the technicals here.

The original TR-808 was discontinued in 1983 thanks to poor sales and a reputation for sounding pretty weird, but it slowly achieved cult status throughout the late ’80s and beyond as it provided the bedrock to the emerging sounds of electro, hip hop and techno. Last week FACT put together a guide to the TR-808 and its influence over more than three decades.

I bet it can sound like anything. Which is not what we want. We want something that sounds like something. A sound that has an identity.

You can get a x0x for £200-£300, cant see it going down much more than this.

And roland will almost certainly miss the point spectacularly.

New roland = meh until proven otherwise.

my guess is thats its gonna be like the machinedrum for kick snares toms etc, Like a small selection of percussion synths and then some hat/cymbal samples

Sneak Thief wrote: The big question if it’s modeled digitally: will it breathe like a real TR-808?

1. You see, the capacitors for the VCAs don’t always fully discharge before the instrument is next triggered which creates a kind of pumping effect. Also, the original clap circuit was poorly designed and you usually can’t hear the clap reverb on the first couple hits. Will they mimic this?

2. Some of the oscillators are free-running, meaning that the beginning of the waveform can differ each time the hats, cymbals and cowbell are triggered. Also, the kick drum uses a bridged T-resonator circuit – a fundamentally unstable analog arrangement where the trigger pings/excites the circuit which bursts into resonance then slowly fades. It’s a beautiful, natural & organic-sounding sound. Will this be emulated?

3. There are also many audible variations between drum hits due to the trigger circuits. Not only that, seeing as most of the original components have 5-20% tolerances, temperature changes create variations in the sound.
From the CDM article.

If Roland were actually smart enough to include some of these happy accidents that were part of the originals sound (even if they were just on/off) that would help me be interested depending on the price. To be clear, I dont want this to be a clone. However, one thing missing from all the new analog gear is the quirkiness, sometimes individual to a single unit, is gone.

Wonder if they are smart enough to include some individual outs as well.

I hope roland doesn't plan to price it in the same range, otherwise... They are so fucked.
Not really needing this machine. But the analog drum sounds + you can load your own samples + elektrons approach to sequencing = some badass fucking drummachine.

Don't know is you can top that. Waiting if this new bit is gonna beat machinedrum.
