did you say you are on a mac? unless you are using bootcamp and also running windows most of what people have suggested so far won't work.

For cheap mac options these are ones i'd suggest as the best options for making dubstep completely on a computer:

Renoise - supposed to be great for electronic music and will work on mac, its also free (with some minor restrictions but very cheap to buy full version). You may find trackers a bit confusing (like i do) if you're used to traditional horizontal sequencers and midi programming though.

Logic 8 - now very cheap compared to what it was and if you're a student you can get it for £118 (but can also be got for no money  if you know where to look). Though i don't advocate the use of illegal software Logic is now out there and apple did purposely get rid of the dongle, so imo they are almost inviting people to download it!
Starting out on Logic can be quite a steep learning curve, but it is the most capable all rounder DAW package to learn for mac, and it is deeep, so get stuck in!!

Reason - never really used it but workflow is supposed to be good. The idea i like about it is one of the things that alot of people hate about it - the fact that it is a closed environment and doesnt support vst's will force you to use what its got, therefore you will learn its tools very very well rather than falling into the trap of always wanting the latest plugins and never really learning any of them.

Try your options out briefly and choose one you like best and then stick with it - you will need to work at any of them to get results so be patient and persevere with one.
