There's key differences between federalism in the US and the European Union in Europe.monkeytown wrote:I would have to say that Eurpoe is no more or less a country than the USA.
I mean, the different states have different laws, different European countries have different laws. However, American law is bound by the constitution, European Law is bound by Strasbourg Jusisprudence.
Then there is is the issue of different states and cities being in different stages of Economic and cultural development.
Great Britain is like, say New England or New York State
Florida is like Spain or Italy.
Washington State like maybe Denmark.
Alabama or Louisiana is like maybe Albania or Kosovo.
United States of America, United States of Europe, its all the same innit.
The EU is a political and economic organisation to which independent nation-states voluntarily devolve part of their soverignty to. Members states can therefore withdraw from the Union at any time. Also, some member states give over more sovereignty than others, for example, the UK has retained its own currency.
The EU does not have any sort of collective military force and member states continue to set their own foreign policy.
The idea of a 'United States of Europe' is therefore quite far of the mark.
