Obviously some people are just geniuses but the vast majority of producers I think it comes down to hard work/luck whether or not they come up with something really good.

I bet a lot of producers who release tunes make a whole heap of shit/average tunes. Think I read a quote from Intalex somewhere where he said Calibre makes about 40 tunes a week and the vast majority are rubbish but he still makes a couple of sick ones a week.

I think 40 might be pushing it a bit, that'd be just over 4 hours per track and that's not including sleep or anything.

Depends really what someon classes as a tune. Do they mean they have a full 6 minutes of music down? Does that mean they just copied and pasted the first 8 bars all the way down or what? Or is it just a 2 minute long thing that they might work on later.

im talking about whole songs - that lack the copy/paste mentality as much as possible. There is a certain copy/paste mentality that is necessary in dance music though

I am no 'top producer' but I usually have about 2-3 on the go, sometimes I complete a tune on a hour sometimes takes me weeks.. No on bothers listening to my stuff part from my mates when I make them listen to it so I guess my input doesn't matter

Yeah well to be honest I got that 40 from the reliable source 'Corpsey's wild imagination' so its probably a tad innaccurate

I have well over 400 saved FL tracks. Maybe 50-70 have been bounced down. 10 ok. 1 good. So i can only imagine what kind of goodies are hiding away on a Benga or skream computer!!!

On a general rule - i try to lay down some drums during the week - the fri night stay up all night writing the rest of the track.

Sometimes tho i will pump out 2 tracks during the week - and rest on friday night. Just depends with all the other factors in life.

yeah, i read somwhere that high contrast made like 100 tunes for his albm, and then he and the label carefully selected 14 from that 100. i think i need to get more like that, and release less, but make what i release, the best.

it's hard though, when you're feeling a tune that you made and you think "this is it!" after your done. your perception is pretty clouded.

I like to keep it pretty fluid as dont just produce Dubstep, I think you can get too bogged down just focusing on one track at a time. When your going through your samples and you just stumble on a synth sound or drum loop which doesnt fit with what your doing but is sick why not start a new arrangement and stick it in a sampler? You can always go back to the track you were working on and sometimes an ear break from listening to the same thing over and over can give you a fresh out look when you go back to it.

It all depends on what works for you at the time though really.

I try and aim to get a least 2 tracks a week bounced down, I then listen to them and remaster them till I'm happy, but this process could be months after its initially bounced down, or it gets canned. I aint no 'top producer' though just saying what I do

I generally only ever have 1 or 2 on the go but my approach to making tunes is extremely slow and obsessive.

i too wonder if people have jobs.. id love to have that much time to make music but then i wouldnt have a place to make it because i wouldnt be able to pay my rent...

For me, the joy is in crafting a tune over time, not in banging out concepts. But each to their own I guess. There are pros and cons to both methods.

think it's benga that does about 6-10 per week or something
