not that common anymore; was far more common 10 years ago or so. smaller places, bars and the like you may have situations where the house is in bridged mono, but most actual venues are in stereo these days.
w/ that said, a mix that's mono-friendly will almost always be the more powerful mix, regardless of playback system.

25hz hits audibily.. and sexily.. on my 10" subs, nevermind a club system. unfortunately abletons eq can only cut down to 30 hz
that considered highpassing at 30 will only leave like a -3 or -4 db to 25hz, but thats enough of a cut to make it lose all the luscious low pump that is left at such low frequencies
