Easy! I haven't heard the term 'Breakstep' in a long time lol.
Expect a lot of tunes from ourselves and Mr Scarecrow coming VERY SOON. I think you're going to see a surge of Breaky/Drumfunk influenced Dubstep over the next 6 months.

P.s Sully is a badman, Ekaj and Protocol got some funk in em too.
Reso has raised the bar with the breaky stuff tho, I tell ya.

Yeah, breaks in dubstep are fantastic, really gives some variety in all the halfsteppers with the kick on 1 and the snare on 9.

Really like Search And Destroy - Positive, on the Lost Lacquers EP. That Protocol X tune, Screwheadz, is sick too.

Made a pretty breaky track myself lately, it's on my myspace. It's the second tune, called 'Pleasey Please'.

but that said, there is never one history, always many. i'll make a few random points:
the term "breakstep" is certainly not one that is widely used. it seems to refer to 2 somewhat distinctly different sounds...

first there is the bingo beats stuff -- zinc/jammin, chase & status, et. al. which to some degree can fairly be called 'slowed down dnb' but which takes advantage of the slower tempo at times to do things like busier kick patterns.

then there is the early dubstep sound which bears some similarlity to the above but has a distinct history and sound. here i'm thinking of dubstep allstars volume 1 - particularly horsepower and el-b. the characteristic snare pattern on these records was hits on 2.5 and 4. some producers took this sound further -- moving snares to all manner of offbeats. the classic release in this vein imo is the s&d / slt mob saddam ep.

i don't recall the term breakstep being used much if at all to describe these sounds when they were current. it seems more of a new term to distinguish them from dubstep. some find this confusing, but others find it useful -- i do.

I remember using and seeing 'breakstep' as a term to differentiate between 'nuskool breaks' and 'breakbeat garage', probably going back 7 yrs now ?

True it fell out of favour as a term when dubstep became popularised and incorporated the sound but you got to remember, a few were desperately trying to remove the breaky element from dubstep in the early days and distance it from it's breaks origins unless it was part of some continuum directly from d'n'b. So kinda like harry potter it just got shut out in his room when people came calling.

But just like harry, you cant keep a good man down.

guessing there is quite a large scene in Netherlands yeah? Still meaning to get over there.

But back to the point yeah I have been feeling alot of the break influenced Dubstep for a while since the direction in garage went kinda breaky with Darquan El B etc... but yeah nice variety really, love some of dub childs bits and Search & Destroy, Vex'd.
