Also, I wonder how many people are going to whack on some Bob Marley or some Peter Tosh today, sit back in their red, gold and green dreadlock hat, smoke a fatty and think how rasta they are. Blissfully unaware of grounation day tomorrow.
whats wrong with reggae and smoking?? :(

Ah mate absoloutely nothing! (Good God absoloutely nothing!!)

Just the adopting of rastafarian traditions as nothing more than a stoner icon does get on my tits a bit. It would be like if...crackheads all started wearing the star of bethlehem round their neck or something.

Oh, and marley and peter tosh I just used as examples because they made some of the most well known rastafarian reggae. (Although of course im not trying to say you have to be rastafarian to listen to it or anything that stupid, I would just kind of hope that people out there at least respect the message they tried to spread :| )

That's why I don't have much respect for Sublime. It seemed like EVERYONE became "Rastas" after that in SoCal.Worst part is,because of them, everyone thinks that Rastafari is only about getting high and Bob Marley. That's how a lot of the mass populace here even came to know about 420.It stinks.

Na man, Sublime had a real love for reggae music. Which they took as influence for the sound their band was going to play.

If you listen, most of their tracks are pretty much covers of reggae tracks, not even just Bob Marley. I remember seeing a list which detailed which tracks where featured in each. To my knowledge they never talked about being Rastas, apart the odd mention of Jah. Which in the music, works.

If fans took it one way, the band still cant be to blame.

True enough. And that's fans for you.But keep in mind, they also chose punk and hip-hop as influences too.And they were a very talented band. The music is good,I have seen them quite a few times when they were just a local SoCal band, and do own the records(as well as a couple of LB Dub All-Stars).And they are from Long Beach, which is a reggae town for sure.

A Nyabinghi friend and I were discussing them, and he brought up the Marley tune "Rivers Of Babylon",which in itself is a Nyabinghi spiritual. He made a good point to me ,saying:"How is someone going to cover a song like that, then go off and od on heroin?".To which I somewhat agreed, because in making reggae much more accessible to the mainstream(thus making more Americans aware that reggae went beyond Bob and The Wailers),and capitalising on a message of Rastafari doctrine, yet Brad Nowell reeked of Babylon. No they never claimed Rastafari, but to quite a few true defenders of the faith I know personally, covering "Rivers Of Babylon" was an insult to the doctrine.

I,myself,am not Rasta, and choose Reggae/Dub as my direction, but the spiritual force behind the music is something that I parallel in my own life. That is...I do hold many of Rastafari principles in myself,so I won't put a sample of "I do not sniff the coke,I only smoke sensimillia" in a song, then go out that night and do a few rails at a 40oz. party. As I said,it gives people the wrong idea about Rastafari - that it's all about smoking weed, listening to Reggae, and nothing more. There is,to me,a huge difference between Reggae and being a "Stoner band".(Coincidentally,I've never heard Cypress Hill or Queens Of The Stone Age ever bring up Jah when they talk about weed.)

Don't worry mate, it was only 420 in Yankland.

In every other sensible country it was just 204, so you didn't miss anything.
