That's great! Someone said 50/50 before...not DW but 50/50 was mentioned. All good by me. Maybe I'm not seeing the difference between the new idea and stuff that's been happening? Plus, I can't go to everything so I choose what I'm most interested in. I know there's overlap in people too, I meant more of the vibe of music that I get/feel.

the map is NOT the territory.
last night, jazzy jay was playin classic breaks and old school hiphop, then the shocklees stepped up & threw down dubstep, then grandmixer dxt took it back again to the classics, then liondub played some ragga dnb & i even got to hear jazzy jay! then drop a dnb tune....
and thats pretty much how its always gone down, if you take it back to the 70's nyc & what has become known as hiphop.
youd have Bambaataa playin a JBs tune, into some reggae into a monkees break or some shit, while wearing a sex pistols shirt and sporting a mohawk.
and to this day, universal people, looking for the perfect beat.
Genres are for selling shit. they are also good MAPS for heads... you cant go to everything, so the genres help you figure out where you should be... they arent altogether bad, but they are TOOLS... they are NOT the MUSIC or the PEOPLE.
so, youve got a bunch of dubstep tunes with classic jungle elements, or dubstep with classic hiphop elements, or jungle with dubstep elements, and they all just melt naturally, because the divisions are illusions, and the truth is that its all one music, one people.

!!!
def worked
you had jazzy jay, doesnt get much more OG than that, dude who pioneered rockin breaks, which is sampling pre samplers... and oh yeh.... so def so def so def its a def jam!... jazzy sensation... man...
and then Mr Rockit himself, the DJ who inspired more key DJs than any other, Grandmixer DXT (DSt), actually drop Rockit! lol...
then you had the dude arguably responsible for inventing Jungle even, and certainly responsible for changing beat making forever, Hank Shocklee playin dubstep.....
tc, jahdan, dyer on the mic.. me on the mic even lol... liondub & amadeus playin ragga jungles...
on a monday night, 101 ave a, nyc lol... (every monday since 1994
and on some crazy shit, that was just monday. friday was the trouble & bass genre smashdown.. thursday we get to hear Mickey Finn at the very Hiphop oriented Legacy, Sub Swara & Low End Theory friday.. god only knows what else is poppin off... (actually friday ill be in baltimore rockin a show with my bredren Bisc1 on some Hiphop... and whenever possible ive been playin alot of dubstep at Hiphop shows all over the place...)
anyways, what im getting at lol, last night was mad fun, NYC is mad fun, whats happening musically is beautiful, people are talented and awesome, and the more we can all get together and have great parties the better..
musical renaissance in effect, enjoy. its gonna just keep getting better.
I find it quite interesting that while dubstep's had a bit of a tradition of people discovering it via room 2 at dnb nights, there's now potential for things to go the other way and more leftfield / less well known jungle / dnb artists to be room 2 music for dubstep nights.Overcast Radio wrote:Yeah that's tough...I agree with Belly in the sense that she may not have heard dubstep without being at a jungle night, and that would've been bad.
There seem to be a lot of dnb-refugees in dubstep who've fallen out with dnb because they don't like either linear liquid stuff or nu-metally techstep, and I'd imagine that a lot of them would get off on people like Fracture and Neptune or Naphta or Fanu or Equinox who are still pushing some kind of alternative if they came across them playing on the same bill as Loefah or Kode 9 or Pinch or someone...

I think that a dubstep/jungle party would go off but I wouldn't limit myself to just those two genres... although, if the aim was to provide a space where those two groups of people could educate one another I think it would work.
All about unification through an unclassifiable bass heavy mashout.

Dubstep meets jungle meets grime meets bassline/4x4 meets dancehall meets breaks (sorry we leftout the bluegrass but that doesn't generally have much bass). This is the second installment of the takeover with the crews from the 4 monthly friday parties at Love joining forces.

Thank you all for the great comments.
a few things i want to address...in terms of what i had in mind at the beginning of this thread:
- Secret Night of Science (IMO) is not a good example of what Jungle means to me. I forget who said this, and i'm too lazy to go through the messages again, but a few people have been mentioning that they appreciate the ragga sounds more when coupled with dubstep... The vision i had was more specific toward a ragga jungle influenced night as opposed to drum and bass influenced. i find the two very different in my mind while others will argue the opposite. either way, Secret Night of Science is predominantly a drum and bass party - not a jungle party. this is not to say they dont play jungle. perhaps im being a bit anal...i just want to point out the flyer labels this party as "...present[ing] the best in drum & bass".
p.s. no disrespect to the takeover or any of the love parties - like Tacospheros says, they are awesome.
- I completely agree with human? about divides being illusions. I personally feel there should not be one, but it takes a joint effort to assimilate a smorgasboard of different peoples. A few pockets of people who attend dubwar/t&b/subswara/secret night/takeover have and continue to successfully merge all different types of people together from different musical tastes/experiences... this is awesome. Not to say that this should be EVERYONEs mission. To each his own, it's just something i aspire to do. Konkrete jungle this past monday was definitely a PERFECT example of this affair.
- come to konkrete jungle more often. it is sick.
- Chu, who said anything about limiting thyself to 2 genres? That would be no fun! NY is filled with some pretty creative people who have a lot to offer to this new epoch. furthermore jungle and dubstep cover a vast majority of musical eras.
-Seckle... how can i explain this.. It's not about looking backwards to what jungle 'was' etc. (if it were about that i'd only wile out to 2 bad mice and droppin science tunes). Though I think i am dwelling on the kind of NASA vibe that ny's rave culture is longing to replicate (sans the glow sticks and pills) - all music is good music.
Love is also a bit segregated in my opinion - I can go up and say hi to just about anyone, no problem, but not everyone is like that. If you survey the dancefloor, groups of people are hesitant to branch out. Perhaps joining jungle and dubstep under one roof can act as a forum for explaining where all the 'genres' connect, and how they each have different pieces to offer to our culture. furthermore, jungle's open-to-anything attitude and fragmented rhythms coupled with dubstep's calmer, more specific, grittier empty space type vibe may birth a better crowd/blur the divide.
i'm talking in circles. point is, we should be able to appreciate other musical influences. 'tis all.

my experience has been that when you combine the 2 genres for a party dubstep always gets shafted, as was the case at numerous WMC parties in Miami, and even our own I Love LA 420 party (at the least the sound was on point in LA). Luckily we havent had to put up with that too often as dubstep was established as a main act early in its LA inception thanks to the Smog one-offs, blew up, and is now showcased weekly by big-sound purveyors Pure Filth (as of last week, twice a weekly!). still, the process took some second rate/room treatment which was... not too bad but not that great either.
i think as a sound and scene dubstep deserves better. and so do I, and all my fellow elitist bredren out there.
