owengriffiths wrote:totally off topic I know, but I have been watching Melbourne drama 'The Secret Life of Us' avidly ever since it's been shown in the UK. They stopped showing it about 2 or 3 years ago but I've just spent a lot of money getting the 3rd series on DVD and although the critics have panned this series as the one where things start to go downhill, I fucking love it.

Question is, is the show representative of what melbourne is really like, or is it in actual fact a bit of a slum like most other cities. Cos life seems to be too good to be true in that programme. Is it a case that St Kilda is the best area in town and far exceeds the other ones?
melbourne has some gritty areas, although on a world slum scale its probably pretty mild.
if ya want some indication of melbourne slums, get out a movie called 'rompa stompa', its one of russle crows first films (hes pretty good in it and im not a fan of his).
its a bit old now but still it an indication of gritty melbourne city.

like flippo said melbourne is a great city,
so all djs come for a holiday and why not do a show while you here :D

Fuck, dont like the sound of those spiders

Yeah, Chopper is the only other film where I've seen Melbourne, it definitely had the more seedier sides, but it was set in the 70's. Does Australia have council estates or is that a mainly european thing. Dont think the Americans or Canadians have that many compared to us (britain/ireland), as far as I know. Sort of wondering cos I'm curious how close the similarities between Australia & britain are, what with the commonwealth and that.

Like in the pic above we have commision housing in the inner city, but there spread out, but im sure its nothing compared to th UK, smaller population and more space if you know what I mean.
although we have got a big drug problem here i think.
ive lived in melbourne city for 7 years with not to much hassle were is when I lived in auckland new zealand it was a different story, random beatings were pretty common.
once were worriors is a good NZ film if your keen to see some forgien stuff bout NZ and whale rider.

again spiders are my biggest beef, went to the bathroom the othereday while I was half way in to it a spider the size of my hand comes out of no where, not what you wana see

But what do the spiders actually do? Do they bite you on the arse cheeks or on the actual ringpiece. And why do they do it? Living in the sewers/toilets doesnt seem all that attractive, even for a spider.

What are you on about

...nothing like council estates in England at all.

Theres like 40 in England. to every 1 in Australia.

England and Australia are at complete opposite ends.
For a start, there isn't much class distinction in Australia.
Making general day to day mentality of people a lot different.

From what I've been told New Zealand is a lot more like England
