in relation to weighting out a kick drum... some samplers/drum machines allow you to blend the dry signal of a kick sample [nice meaty attack etc] with a phase osc to get those lovely subby tones.

what's really clever is you can tune that extra osc to the 'key' of ur song [or whatever else the bass is doing] =/- 1 octave so it's all sitting nicely.

i use logic's ultrabeat for that.
