I can remember a Beastie Boys interview from way back where they were talking about starting a conversation by discussing the connections between Sonic Youth, Sun Ra and Public Enemy - all totally different types of music, but all with similar elements and ideas.
I can clearly see the connection musically between thrash metal and techstep (progressions and mood) although some seem not to notice it, presumably so they won't lose their tribal colours. I think eclectism is helpful in getting a better understanding of music and life in general, would be very tedious listening to the same thing day in, day out
dubstep/dub and drone
dubstep/dub and doom/metal

			wikked thread
its undenailable that music can lift us to dif levels
and not just when on drugs!
the reason can be explained with scienece as well as mysticism.
certain parts of your body (and brain!) have resonant freqs, when these vibrate in unison with music your actual experinece can be altered.
most people when on drugs "loose themselves" to the music.
this happens to people to a greater or lesser extenet the whole time depending on there biological make-up, sensitivity etc....
in fact if you look into some of the new theorys of reality (which are the old "gnostic theories" in sceince language imo). it appears that all of creation is just waves at certain dif freqs. meaning that nothing is actually solid as we think it is , rather the freq of the waves are slower/more static. so by the aplication of certain sound waves etc... activation (and therefore evolution/spiritual growth) of the subject can be advanced
hope you get what i mean, lol

Who's seen Sunn O))) live?
They look like this and play drawn out droning doom metal with lots of sunn bass amps giving their live show lots of sub bass. I really want to see them live, seems like pure (evil) meditation.

Some music makes me think but not dubstep. It appeals more to my inner caveman rapist.

as far as i know music (sound) is the only sense witch goes directly to the emotional part of the brain without being interpretated before (like vision...)
i'd say there is that with vision as well, certain colours triggering certain feelings for example.
or maybe i just have synesthesia.

or maybe i just have synesthesia.
there was a great little anecdote i heard somewhere about a famous composer who thought, as a child, that the reason the lights went down at the start of an orchestral concert was so that everyone could see the colours more vividly. he had synesthesia and thought everyone else in the world did too.
i've forgotten who it was, though, so the anecdote is fucking pointless.

is there a difference though between gnosis and sensual bliss?
does "getting lost in the music" help our perceptions to bypass the lower (corrupted) emanations of divinity?
is abstract meditation all it takes?
if the master delivers a particularily enlightening koan,
does the student ask for a rewind?
do i have a pony-tail?

lol and no I wouldn't confuse sensual bliss with Gnosis. As I said it might aid in one's quest.
And no I'm not a hippy(hippies get on my fucking nerves actually)and I don't do drugs.

Nice to see some depth and expanded awareness when discussing "dance" musick. I agree that dubstep has a strong potential for triggering Gnosis. I believe it is due to the emphasis on space and atmosphere, repetition and the physiological experience of large bass on the nervous system. Alll these elements in addition to the amount of novelty, diversity and innovation in the genre have definetly created a few peak experiences for me.

yo, call me crazy but if you are driving in your car i would really like to hope your paying attention to the road, and not rain dripping down your windsheild, or cloud formations.
this actually scares and concerns me....
maybe dubstep should have a warning label:
!DO NOT OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DUBSTEP!
