I've just ordered it, thank you guys!
I'm really hooked to nosaj thing's music, some really serious beats there. Mike slotts last ep is awesome, you can download one of the tracks on the XLR8R magazine website http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2008/10/deux-three
Enjoy it!

da wonk...
Yeah the west coast of the US is flooded with this sound... Check out:
Bassnectar
Vibesquad
Tipper
Subvert
Boreta
Marty Party
Kraddy
Mr. Rogers
Eprom
and quite a few more but this will get ya started. A lot of these guys kill it live as well, Loren(Bassnectar) is probably the star of the scene out here, a huge draw. Mr. Rogers has been rinsing a new Onyx "Slam" remix that is off the hook! not released yet though...

more info...
if you're looking for tracks to buy, a great site for this sound is addictech.com . Just search any of those listed in the last message, or search for "midtempo", you'll find all sorts of artists. One of my fav sites, ran by two incredible djs Hypnotech and Neuronaut.

Yeah that dirty, brappy, gum flappin' bass driven sound is crossing over everywhere, you hear it in house, tech, d&b, etc. but I really dig the midtempo (90-110 bpm) feel. Two more of my favorites to check out are:
Heyoka-pure DMT inspired trippy trippy beats. His new album expands on his unique sound. Supurb production, sound great in headphones or on a loud system.
Break Beat Buddha- huge in the scene for years, still killing it.
Some DJs rinsing this sound out here:
Adam Ohana aka An-Ten-Nae
Dj Laura EFL
Dj Shawna
Zapper- crazy live P.A. I think he may have just moved to France...
Ana Sia
Gabriel EFL
I dropped this about half of my set last Satuday, just good time party music, never fails to get the crowd moving...

more stuff...
Oh for sure, here's some more artists:
Mimosa
Spoonbill
Dr. Toast
Timonkey
NEXT LEVEL+
Skeetaz
Bil Bless
KnowSleep
Labels:
Muti Music
Ooze System Recordings
Planet Mu
Tipper Music
Glitch Mob Unlimited
Alpha Pup
Proboscis
Bless Records
Om Records
Addictech Records
Tigerbeat 6
Satamile
Lobotomy Records
Omelette
Missin/glink
Spacebar Sentiments
Street Ritual
Interchill Records
Really the best place to find this online is addictech.com (hate to sound like an advertisement but it's true) In their search engine just use the keyword "midtempo", you'll find all of these artists and labels there : )
The site is out of San Francisco, which has become ground zero for this sound. Hard to go to a party and not hear it... always gets the heads bouncin', and the ladies love it, and if the ladies are lovin' it and twisting up on the dancefloor the guys sure to follow and pretty soon there's no room left, it gets hot and sweaty and the shirts start coming off... no joke, I've seen it happen right in front of me before hahaha... So this should get you a good start, a couple of tracks from each of these artists and you'll have a bangin' set : )

I could be wrong, but Prefuse 73 has been doing glichy / idm / hip hop for years. Then you have edIT, MACHINE DRUM, and Telfon tel aviv as well. But this wonky business is a little different. Lukid, flylo, mike slott, they are pushing this in a new direction, and i'm not sure how long this has been going on for.
there's a few of these that get under the radar but are worth checking...

feelin the bleepy/wonky shit but not all of it's good, some of it seems disjointed for the sake of it at the expense of musicality...
as for those moaning about the name, just get over it - pigeonholes are just there so that a) we can discuss music without having to be overly descriptive all the time, and b) so that it can be marketed/sold.

nuthin wrong with giving something a name..wonky is just isnt whats needed..an interpretation of hip hop should just be called hip hop / instrumental hip hop..glitch, lazer and wonky all put out the wrong idea in my opinion.ThinKing wrote:there's a few of these that get under the radar but are worth checking...
