send to a bus and highpass. then add some saturation and a little reverb. possibly some subtle delay too.

I definantly second this. I think layering oscillators is key.

watch the Rusko producer masterclass, because as much as people may or may not like him(i like him by the way). you can't knock the mans production. and in there along with aload of other good tips he shows you how he makes one of his basses.

but after that i think its always good to process them. i do it they same way as other people have already suggested, i.e distortion, compression, eq etc

something iv been experimenting with aswell is antares tube. i find it adds weight and a nice grit to the bass. im pretty sure there not selling it anymore but if you google it you'll probably find a cracked version.

i also saw a post that i think was on hear about sending a slight bit of the midrange to a reverb, seems to be having a nice effect on it.anyone else got any thoughts on that?

and i reckon you should always layer a pure sine wave under it for the sub, because i think you can't beat that for the "grab you in the stomach till you feel sick, BUT ITS OH SO GOOD" feeling.

just my 2 quids worth.

im probably gonna start a new post on this, but has anyone got any suggestions on some good saturation plugins?

Splitting the signal into separate bands, widening and putting some fast flange on the mids does the trick 4 me.
Also, working with group channels/FX channels helps to not destroy your original signal. Just send a part of it into a nice warm tube or fxs....then route all wet and dry in a bus and compress.

To get a super - gritty sound, I use albino's built in LoFi, and then use Acid's Crackle remover to make it a bit smoother without the uhh, crackles.

And also eq.

Here's a good one: Spinaudio3Dchorus set the rate to 0, use 3 frequencies, tune them in to the bassline with high feedback then reduce feeback a bit and pan 1 frequency to the left and back a bit, 1 in the centre and 1 the the right and back a bit then turn down the wet level a bit so its not too loud. This will give your phatten up your wobble/throb/reece no end!
