DEADLY HABIT- ABSENT, ABANDONED & ELATED LP - DARKLAND
This new long player from the one like Deadly Habit is not the first non-DNB output from him or from Darkland, but it is the first collection of leftfield noodling from this craftsman. Right from the gate, Kung Pau hits you with a mash-up of Eastern-drenched harpsichord, Hip-Hop-style beats and a lonely sax. That Absent, Abandoned feel carries over into a chunk of this album, which kind of plays as a soundtrack for the lowly technician, tinkering with his various workstations, trying to create something tangible with a bevy of sound. Educate is a quiet crunk riot, with a clap heavy beat providing a calm bed for a ton of bleeps, blips and FX. Mass Madness ups the ante, with a pair of battling beats rocking over some crazy bass tones. The deep electro wash on Riverbanks and Covered Bridges is going to be a favorite, taking the sound of this collection back to a time when all that was needed were vibes and beats. Throughout this collection of broken beats, downtempo excursions and a host of other genres, we realize that the artist that is Deadly Habit has a lot more going on than some drumfunk-y, darker-edged flavors. This one might not be for everyone, but if your mind is open and you need some beats to soothe you in the cold night, this is the set to put on.
