btw, DJ Bone shouldn't really be in that list. He's a techno DJ.
On the Detroit side of things (sometimes called Ghettotech, although
it's a terrible name) these are some of the original artists:
* DJ Assault (Electrofunk Records, Assault Rifle)
* Mr De' (Electrofunk Records, Assault Rifle)
* DJ Godfather (Databass Records, Twilight 76 Records)
* DJ Nasty (Motor City Electro Company, Databass Records)
* Erik Travis (F.A.C.T. Records)
and on the Chicago side (Booty House, Ghetto House, and its latest
incarnation, Juke), these are some of the original names to look for:
* Eric Martin
* Paul Johnson
* DJ Funk
* Jammin Gerald
* DJ Milton
* DJ Deeon
* DJ Slugo
* DJ Chip
* Waxmaster
* DJ Nehpets
* Gant Man
Label-wise, the Chicago juggernaut was Dance Mania, but it didn't just put out
booty/ghetto house - there's lots of more straight house on there too.
Both scenes were influenced by Miami Bass to different extents, and
the Chicago booty sound influenced Detroit's sound, but not so much
the other way.

Nah, not booty, but lots of the sounds and scenes rub up against each other
to greater or lesser extents. The Detroit booty stuff isn't all "booty" anyway -
there's just no proper name for it all since it just kinda evolved in Detroit without
press interest in naming it etc. It's just the style and mix of styles of tracks which
became popular for lots of DJs to play.
More than half the tracks you might hear in a booty set won't have anything
sexual about them. It's a hard scene to describe as there are the tracks
that people DJ, and there are the tracks that people produce, and they're
not the same thing. The DJing came first, and then people like Godfather and Assault/Mr De'
started making tracks that were somewhere between all the Electro, Bass, Freestyle,
Techno, House and Hiphop which was being played, some of which have a bit of sauce
in their vocals (which is the Bass showing its influence), but lots which don't.
If I think about a Detroit booty set then I'll be thinking about stuff by Godfather, Assault,
Nasty etc. but also other Detroit stuff like all the classic Techno Bass (check out AUX 88, Posatronix),
classic electro Juan Atkins stuff (Model 500) stuff, early Dopplereffekt, Ectomorph etc. and that's
just tracks from Detroit without going into all the house, bass, electro, freestyle, hiphop etc.
which might pop up in a set. I love how mixed up it can be style-wise, but I'm influenced by
how certain DJs used to play in the 90s - if you check out a set by Assault or Godfather now
then you're often likely to only hear their own (or their label's) material, which is a pity.

Twilight 76 - Runs the ghettotech scene, other labels just can't compare.

and
Databass Records - Same dude runs this as well, good guy. Worked with the guy for a while in detroit.

www.twilight76.com
(which twilight76.com currently directs to, but don't rely on it) is:
http://www.electrobounce.com/
It's what was Twilight76 and now has an MP3 store, forum and merchandise,
and they also do digital distribution too. All tracks from my Global Fire label
can be bought there (along with all the other online stores):

alongside Databass, MCEC, Bass Force, Juke Trax, M.A.P. Records etc.
saying chicago booty influenced D and not the other way around is posturing. just use your ears. both cities inlfuence each other, but theres a competitive rivaly so people from Chi always make that claim.
from the late 80s to the early 90s detroit booty mixes evolved from sped up electro hip hop instro b-sides. the geto house influence came in a little later.
I still think both juke and getotech producers could learn from DnB. but theyre too self absorbed to learn new tricks.

It's not posturing at all - I'm a Londoner and not some blinkeredginsu wrote:saying chicago booty influenced D and not the other way around is posturing. just use your ears. both cities inlfuence each other, but theres a competitive rivaly so people from Chi always make that claim.
underexposed person sat in Chicago or Detroit. I love them both.
Chicago stuff is starting to get more influenced by Detroit, but that's only
a recent thing. If you only go back a couple of years then you can see
Chicago sat very much on its own and seemingly unaware of Detroit sounds,
but with Detroit very well aware of Chicago - Detroit's sucked in influence
from all over the place but Chicago's been quite insular I reckon.
You might see all that Jit vs Juke stuff on youtube now, but that's so
recent - people into the music in the two cities didn't even seem to be
on the internet a couple of years ago.
If I think about Detroit influence in Chicago stuff then the first thing that
springs to mind is Deeon's "Shake Dat Ass" (from this in 1998:
http://www.discogs.com/DJ-Deeon-2-High- ... ase/233594 ) which
samples Dopplereffekt's Master Organism. It really stands out because
I can't think of many (any?) other examples from that period. Detroit
tracks from then and before, on the other hand, are peppered with
booty house samples. More recently there's been a little crossover
from Detroit to Chicago - Chi-town's Ghetto Teknitionz crew comes to
mind just from their name, which is probably influenced by the "Ghettotech"
name. I've even seen Chicago producers calling their tracks "Ghetto-tek"
etc. recently, but you don't really hear it in the sound.
Now look at business between the two - Godfather (Detroit) approached
Deeon, Slugo, Nehpets and Waxmaster (Chicago) and re-released classic tracks of
theirs on his Detroit label. Later on the Databass (now Electrobounce)
crew became good friends with Chicago heads like Boogie and Rashad
and started releasing their stuff on Juke Trax - a Detroit label releasing
a Chicago sound, and bringing them over to the DEMF. I'm trying to think
of the reverse happening, and I can't think of any examples.
That's true, but that's only because Ghetto House didn't exist before.ginsu wrote:from the late 80s to the early 90s detroit booty mixes evolved from sped up electro hip hop instro b-sides. the geto house influence came in a little later.
Detroit DJs have always played the latest and greatest Chicago tracks,
and as soon as Dance Mania started doing the ghetto-style releases then
they were playing those too, and getting influenced by them. Detroit's
booty stuff came from the Techno before it (amongst other stuff) and
Techno again was Detroit taking something of a Chicago sound and putting
its own futuristic twist on it.
There's influence both ways, but Detroit was way more open-eared than
Chicago was. If Chicago Ghetto House producers in 1996 were taking
influence from "native" Detroit sounds then you'd spot it a mile off - where
are the icy melodies and thoughts of space? Not there. But check DJ
Assault shit from then and there's the Chicago influence right there.
They're just different cities whose music evolved pretty differently -
Chicago didn't have Electrifying Mojo or the Wizard, and it shows. Doesn't
mean it's a bad thing - it's just a thing.

i picked up some steppin videos to learn some footwork (theres some crossover between the showoffy james brown style steppin footwork guys do and juke footwork) - discovered theres a whole steppin style of music with djs and etc. ive never seen it covered in any hipster dance music zine. its unique but could be compared to downtempo house/rnb very soulful and jazzy. might mix well with dub... or dubstep since people are getting back to the funky house influence.
