I believe when this was originally brought up in the "Dubstep and criticism" thread, a valid point was made that criticism for it's own sake is really just a fruitless task. There are plenty of opinions on this board as to what good tunes and bad tunes and I'm sure if you search the archives you can see plenty of people saying that they don't feel such-and-such tune. The point is that dedicating a whole thread to tunes you think are "shitty" is not only pointless, it's divisive.

Truly, what enlighted debate can come about when you're already of the mind that a certain tune is shit? And if you don't agree, what other response would you have to such a statement, other than "No it's not"? That's not debate and it's not productive.

Additionally, what should probably also be recognized is that despite the board's membership being global, there is still a strong local flavors to it as well, where members are interactiving w/ each other outside of this message board. So of course ppl are going to big up their friends, and the producers they talk to every weekend. It's not as if the board is totally anonymous, where uninterested debate can just flourish without consequence.

I really don't agree with you, Intoccable. I generally check out almost all new releases on Boomkat, etc. and I can't say I' ve actually heard a SHIT tune. I've heard loads of tracks that wouldn't fit into my sets and a couple that just don't do anything for me (f.ex. the "Grim Dubs")... but really shit tunes where I think to myself that the people behind it are taking the piss... no, not yet luckily. If I did hear something like that I would'nt mind criticising it at all. If a tune is utter crap, a warning on this forum would be in order.
The way I see it this scene is still so young and the few things that do get released are usually of a high standard idea and productionwise.

Another thing I don't understand... if you really want some criticism, why not start the ball rolling by naming the tunes you think are a bunch of arse. I'd be quite interested to know what they are as I haven't found any yet.

It seems simple to me...

If you don't like a tune, don't big it up, and don't fuckin buy it.

Theres enough tunes out that most people have to be selective about what they buy, so survival of the fittest will eventually apply.

Coming on a forum and saying THIS TUNE/PRODUCER IS SHIT isn't gonna help anyone is it?

Its not a big online circlejerk, its just people not pissing each other off for no good reason.

Its all about the personals innit. I dont think that anyone should openly say this tune/producer is shit, but at the same time should not be held back in voicing an opinion if a relevant topic arises.

However, saying that the people on the forum are how Kams1 describes is waste. Either the man is out to wind people up or he aint ever been to a dubstep night.

I've heard some stuff that sounds pretty boring to me, usually but not always half-step stuff.

However, I haven't heard most of those tunes on a proper system and in dubstep more than most music I think that matters. Some loefah tunes I have on my PC sound pretty average on my sub- says it all, really.

those tech itch tunes i dont rate. they are kind of boring too me plus feels like he is just in it for the bank.

there are soo many styles in dubstep right now tho!
so its all about preference. some of the hench stuff doesnt appeal to me but tons of people feel for it.
this gets into some really tricky issues about preference and quality and the future....

i've never heard any of these, not in sets and i never got the time to check them at the shop before they got sold
i think it's kind of weird though, tech itch on dubstep.
technical itch's got great dnb but i can't reflect that atmosphere onto something as dubstep.

know that there are people on DOA who love dubstep, as there are people who don't feel current dnb aswell, as there are people mostly into old school, aswell people who love breakcore, aswell people who prefer hip hop, etc..
just check the "what are you listening to now" topic.
there may be a few narrowminded people but you can't generalise on this one
