Factory:For all things diverse and interesting, but too many reasons to list.I'll put just a few though:Joy Division changed the monotony of punk-rock,and subsequently,if it weren't for for Barney and the rest moving on as New Order, coming to the States, discovering Detroit Electro and Chicago House for themselves, and fusing it with thier own sound, thus bringing those elements to the UK,I doubt that most British electronic music would be as incredible as it is today without them.Happy Mondays - of fookin' course!!!A Certain Ratio for sheer funk.Crispy Ambulance for dark ambient electronic punk experiments.ESG - one of the most sampled songs in history is "UFO".The Wake outta Scotland did thier most interesting work on Factory when Bobby Gillespie(Primal Scream) was thier bassist, adding mad dubby lines to the post-punk.And seeing how dubby PS gets...
Beyond that,I love all things MCR!!Boddingtons,ManU,42st.,Sankey's,Dry Bar,Mutz Nutz,Vox Pop,Vinyl Revival,Picadilly Records, the Pakistani owned chippy at the south side of Picadilly Gardens across from the busses...
Big up Mancunia!
Anyway,back to topic...
Creation:Shoegaze and Primal Scream. What else can I say?
4AD:As I mentioned in another post,FSOL got the vocal sample for "Papua,New Guinea" from Dead Can Dance.Cocteau Twins virtually invented Shoegaze. And almost every band on that label was doing something completely different than any other band was at whatever time they came out.Yes,even Gus Gus.
Warp:No need to reiterate here.If you don't know, then you never will!
On-U Sounds:Adrian Sherwood/African Head Charge!!!
Ariwa:Mad Prof.=Mad Respect!
Black Ark/Upsetter:Lee'Scratch"Perry!!
Kompakt:Other-worldly music.
Motown:Because dance music would be nowhere without soul.
Metalheadz:C'mon now...
Soul Jazz:Great reissues and new stuff too!
Blue Note:The roots of jazzy DnB.
Instinct:A jazz label not afraid to experiment.
