the reality is to secure dj bookings these days outside of your local scene you pretty much have to be a producer of some sort. vinyl digital they both have shit disposable tunes doesn't really matter, as long as you buy/play what you genuinely dig and not just what the latest hype tracks are, or just because it's a dub. (part of the reason there are so many disposable releases) foramt has nothing to do with quality control, sales do.

Since discovering Dubstep i started "Producing" (if you wanna call it that ha) and because of the fact that i love the music so much i want to make my own tunes. I also started DJ'ing when i discovered Dubstep because as soon as i got to a party i would just be where the music was, selecting songs so i figured why not be a DJ? and again because i love the music so much.

If i ever get any releases i will not feel like they are an official release until they are on wax!

This discussion isn't about the number of producers there are, but the number of BAD producers there are.
most people I have run into agree that 90 percent of music in any genre is garbage. None of them will agree on which 10 percent is worth keeping. I've been to record stores and listened to 75 cuts and bought 2, so I am as guilty as anyone else. I just didn't buy the same 2 as the next chap who also tossed 73 cuts back.

One thing will always remain constant.

Diversity is key.

dubstep is a DIY culture but yet some people are saying "leave it to the big boys"

kinda makes me yuke.

obviously its up to the labels not to release shit that is mastered like ass, and people wont buy from them if they put out shat. pretty simple.

Diversity, important word.
Sometimes when you go to a record store, you can pick a record blindly from a deck of 20, knowing it will sound the same as the other 19.
(also: note my use of the word sometimes)

exactly, stop bitching about it

you act like every established producer popped out the womb and started pushing out bangers from their crib

How can you POSSIBLY complain about a huge amount of producers in YOUR favored genre of music? It only means there will be more diversity and more dope tracks once they get it down and start pushin sick shit

Mastering costs about the same regardless of whether it's for digital or vinyl in most cases. If you're going to a good house, it's not going to make a whole lot of financial difference either way. There aren't too many producers making tunes, there are too many Jukeboxes playing tunes and getting paid on the backs of the producers making the tunes.

How this has anything to do with the format is beyond me. Let me go and check out the top 20 of any "reputable" shops and we'll see that they are consistently the anointed few "taste makers" and the tunes are getting regressive at this point. So if the question is whether or not we have too many producers, we should ask ourselves if maybe the producers that need to disappear are the ones who just can't make good tunes anymore.

I hear a lot of great unreleased stuff every day. If we're talking quality control, I use a different stick than vinyl/digital... I prefer to look at the name of the producer on the release... if they are "big" they probably aren't doing anything new.

thread over.

^^^^this

If I find I'm making tunes to fit a mold or certain market, then I know i'm done for.

There's so much good music being made in other genre's that i find i need to keep an open mind and try to incorporate any influences, and what feels right to me into my music. That's what keeps things fresh and forward looking.

I would like to think I can look back in five years and say that I didn't try to follow a particular niche, and do it until the horse was well and truly flogged.

If i feel like mixing some folk guitar into a tune I will do. If someone says that two kinds of music don't really fit together, that makes me wanna try and do it anyway, even if it falls flat on it's arse.

Not necessarily, but i agree that too many digital labels don't have a profile that is strong enough.
In my opinion, a digital label should have some trademark thing to it, people should be able to recognise a quality structure behind it and have some association with it (artwork, events, mixes, videos, etc.)
It can definitely be done, but often it's not executed in the right way.

That's such a load of shit

I'm no Benga/Skream fanboy by ANY means, but even the stuff they're putting out atm is far more exciting, not just better produced, than the slew of no-name producers I have to wade through to buy my music. Skream doing nuff interesting stuff with soca style drums etc. Then brehs like Geiom constantly switching up and keeping it fresh, new is what Berkane Sol does. Even Kromestar - if anything he wasn't so hot between Kalawanji and now, but now shit like 6 points is keeping it 100% real. 6 points has a complete genuine dubstep seal of approval imo, loads of his other new tunes too. Then try talk shit about Pinch, his new shit on planet-mu is ridiculous. And even if the flipside aint anything new it's doing the 06/07 ting 1,000,000x better than anyone else. It's got a bait sample like so many tunes coming out now except it actually has a song to back it.
What do you define as "new" ?!
