I might have to get an expensive pair like that then because i would pay twice that much not to have my ears ring after I play out.

If its an expensive custom pair then it sounds the same, just quieter, and they will fit your ears perfectly so they wont be uncomfortable. Cheaper ones muffle it slightly and you can feel them but they arnt uncomfortable generally.

I wish I had some earplugs when listening to various world famous reggae systems with their ridiculously overdriven 100+ piezo top boxes in my younger days.

The ER20's are brilliant, cheap, and occasionally a definate blessing when a deaf old soundbwoy is over compensating for his lack of hearing by killing off the audience's top end.

nice one. i've tried using shure in-ears for dj'ing and i'm just too fussy w/ 'em--i know a few folks who do it though and it's absolutely changed their djing 1000x for the better (and they were great before-one's the tour DJ for aesop rock and el-b). For live gigs as a drummer though, when i'm playing w/ track or a click, in-ears are great!

about a year ago after a gig i got out of the shower and had vertigo real bad
so bad i nearly vomited. the first thing i noticed afterwords was i had sudden hearing loss in my left ear,as i was lying in my bed i noticed a huge difference as i was listening to music. my audiologist said it was significant and put me on steroids for a month,i got 10db back but it is still bad with constant ringing. be very careful my brothers and sisters.don't know what you got til its gone .javascript:emoticon(':!:')

Being the production forum, be careful with your monitoring levels too. I *highly* recommend calibrating thm for repeatability - and safety!

They're disposables though. They make it SOOO clouded. Might as well put your fingers in your ears.

You want to buy some re-usable ones, I bought some for £15 from Hooters in Watford (dunno whether Hooters are a chain or not) but if you go to any music shop they will sell equivalent for similar price.

what do they sound like? i've been meaning to buy some in that sort of price range for ages cos the disposable plugs sound shit and i'm not up for paying £100 for custom moulds. yours any good?

Also just a general warning about cotton buds - dont use them. Gave me an ear infections but worse still my mate had one stupidly sticking in his ear and then caught it on the bathroom mirror - little blood punctured ear = tinittus for life - I fell so fecking sorry for him you can see the stress in his eyes when he talks about it.

We get as many of them as we want at work for free. Theyre ok they make a lot of the noise from the machines (mid-high end mostly) much quieter and you can still here people speak quite clearly. I made sure to stock up on plenty of them when i wen to Creamfields last year and they were great there too. The sound was muffled a bit but everything was at a good level. I was right at the front and the highs were still very audible but not painful, mids same and there was plenty of bass. I tried the next night without and there was a fucking notable difference. Theyre much better than having nothing at all.

But i could do with checking out some higher end plugs.

I have to agree there. There was a band I went to see a couple years back who were a real crazy canadian Noise Rock/No Wave band. It was in a small venue that was underground and it was insanely loud. It was made worse by the fact that all there music consisted of playing as loud, harsh and hard as possible. The guitarists even did shit like smashing each others guitars into each other.

My ears were so fucked up afterwards I had to have the radio on to try and drown out the ringing and white noise I could constantly hear. Over the next couple days I couldn't even hear people very well who were sat right next to me.

Anyway overall I think earplugs are essential if you're djing all the time or in a band. My uncle who's played in loads of bands, been a session musician, tour manager etc. all his life now has real bad tinitus. Says you'll never realise how important just being able to hear silence is until it's too late.

I wish I would have in my foolish youth standing infront of 50K systems

paying the price now...
Btw- Alpine do some great earplugs with 3 diff filter freq's for £15 (look on chemical)

Sounds pretty much the same man (with ER20's anyway) and it's not uncomfortable.. you forget you have them in after about 5 minutes. You do get a couple of reminders from people who say "what are they

". And someone at the Outlook launch party asked me what I was listening to haha
