...And everyone gets in a tizzy - like when Britney Spears had wobble in that "Freakshow" track of hers a while back, or speaking of Britney when AK1200 did that remix for her (at least I think it was her. Don't really recall cuz I wasn't paying attention)...

Now when Rihanna or someone like her gets, say, Substep Infrabass or Anstam to do a track for 'em - then I'll be worried. 'Til then... who cares?

They're probably just getting any pop stars they can to jump on the bandwagon since they let Snoop sing over Eastern Jam. That didn't do anything, so I don't see how she would.

It irritates me because it degrades the genre. You already know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it'll be the most watered down song they can make. Dubstep isn't a genre that is very lyric happy, you know?

They're going to have to take all the life out of the song just to give Rihanna the spotlight, because let's face it, why would she make a song where she wasn't singing 100% of the time?

So once again, we'll have another OMGDUBSTAPBANGA tune that consists of a quantized 808 drum loop, and a elementary wobble. It'll be just like "Freakshow" where the song had a basic wobble bass and the media went WELL THATS DUBSTAP FOR SURE! while every single respectable dubstep fan went .....yea, clearly.

I mean, of course it won't be popular, because no mainstreamer digs thems complex riddims in dubstep, but still. It's infuriating I say!

What is dubstep nowadays? It's such a diverse genre. There's a huge gap between artists like Rusko and the more atmospheric, dubby/garagey Burial for example.

I don't think people should get hit up on the underground vs mainstream debate, its all part of the sounds evolution. If people are sick of wobbles and the generic formula, there is plenty of dubstep out there without. Failing that, just make your own dubstep and formulate it to your own tastes and channel your sound through your own emotions.

And actually, what has 'dubstep' ever been exactly? It was even more diverse a few years back and there were even fewer "rules" or signature sounds or cliches or whatever, although back then it was also just a handful of folks doing it.

A Burial quote from 2006:

"For now, dubstep is safe from being pillaged by the mainstream, at least according to Hyperdub's experimental artist, Burial. “The music is in good shape because everyone's in splinter cells,” he says. “They're in the ditch — there's no highway to attract the rubbish producers. The lights of the highway, that's when it goes wrong. But right now it's just darkness; everyone's just off wandering."

So there you go. Everybody, avoid the lights of the highway AT ALL COSTS!

½step, wobble... these things caught on because they sound good to us. But is that all there really is to dubstep? Of course not. Dubstep = Dub + Step, i.e. Dub aesthetics & sensibility grafted to a rhythmic core with roots in dance music.

Or is that too much reductionism?

Maybe she ups for a gang bang fuck it..

Meanwhile in other news..

Listen if Sony or another huge record label came to you and said were going to give you $50,000 and your going to produce some dubstep with rihanna singing over top of it.. Tell me... you would not go for that... Even.. if not for the money but just for the EXPOSURE they are going to get by working with her.
Chase & Status are smart as fuck for doing what they are doing and expanding the audience of dubstep...
ABLETON LIVE...

The Snare Bear wrote:What a joke...dubstep reminds me of the 80s hip hop movement...everyones calling it a fad, it will pass, but it just seems to be growing. The best part is, the dirtier, more rootsy, or wobbly the tracks get, the less appealing they are to these electro obsessed preteens in the mainstream.

And Chase n status are alrright, coommme onnn saxon is killer. eastern jam's a tune too, albeit a popular one., but just because somethings popular doesnt mean you should hate it...

but yea rihanna doin dubstep sounds wack. shes sexy though, gotta give her that
This. Except I'm giving her a chance to do it right. I like being surprised!

i'm not a huge C&S fan but its ridiculous how people are so ready to shit all over a track that hasn't even been heard (or maybe even made) yet.

"i love dubstep, i love dubstep, i love dubstep, I love dubstep, OH NO PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF THE SCENE ARE TAKING INTEREST THEY ARE GOING TO FUCK IT ALL UP BY ALLOWING DUBSTEP ARTISTS TO WORK WITH MAJOR LABELS AND EARN SOME DECENT MONEY"

*rant over*

Sorry but sometimes it needs to be said. Maybe we can hear a tune first and then judge it, and if it is shit then slag it to hell and back.
