i saw him with warrior queen once, it was pretty cool but i don't reckon it's necessary to do massive reverb sweeps that last for about 30 seconds so you keep missing chunks of the tune and get your ears destroyed.
he's playing with flowdan quite soon near me, hopefully it'll be a bit better.. i still rate him as a top producer!

I had a similar experience at Dour last year. I mean the guy has got big tunes out, but his live performance is horrible and just painful for your ears.Reptilian wrote:saw him at west indian centre and had to leave go outside for a breather cos i thought i might go deaf
also for some reason it was pretty boring and even tunes that i normally like didnt grab me. partly because of the irritating way they were presented with loads of awkward stops and truly hideous blasts of noise
that said he has done some absolutely brilliant tunes and i do respect the guy. this was TOO loud though. distance was on before him and sounded quiet by comparison

Unfortunately that opportunity was squandered... Especially right after Buraka Som Sistema slayed the place, there was so much good energy in that crowd- to be fair, they had technical issues at the beginning that kind of killed the vibe right off the bat. It didn't get much better though- I couldn't even stay for the whole thing honestly... wicked talented producer, total let down live...[/i]thirdandarmyst wrote:saw him at coachella with warrior queen... i was looking forward to his set more than alot of other sets to see how a big festival crowd would respond to dubstep. i was thoroughly disappointed, his set blew
Sorry but USUALLY (or what i perceive to be usual), "dubstep" (or whatever phrase you want to use) is mixed one track into the other with the occasional rewind or whatever...ov3r wrote:are you all lot dumb?
do you really think the bug cant fucking beatmach or what?
RASTATRONICS yeah u go book yourself electrohouse dj
If the guys doing a dubstep set i expect it to be a string of tunes primarily, not just playing them one after the other. And just stopping a record or whatever the Bug did and bringing in another one does not require half as much skill to beatmatch and produce a nice mix.
So either the Bug can't beat match, or for some reason he didnt want to ...
Either way, I don't really think that its an accurate portrayal of live "dubstep" (In my eyes anyway)
i think what people are getting shitty with, is the fact that these dudes are getting flown around the world, being paid top dollar, charging top dollar and then performing below average. when we all know at least 10 people who can technically put together a better set.
shits me as well. when i pay good money to see someone - i want them to at least look interested and show some skills

He's not really a dubstep artist or DJ though.
... I'm not odd for saying that, right?
The Bug sort of does the thing where he makes whatever genre of electronics that's 'hot' fit his vision of 'Evil Dub'. Like... "Pressure" sounds more like Breakcore to me, whereas "London Zoo" is more dubsteppy. And obviously, KMS is supposed to be more of a hip-hop vibe.
Point is, he's not being booked for being a Dubstep DJ. So the argument of him doing whatever for Dubstep is pointless. Same as he's not doing anything for Grime, Hip-Hop, Industrial, or whatever the fuck. The Bug is just going to do him.
And anyway, he's not about making people dance. Otherwise, he'd make people dance. He's about playing the tracks, and making you watch the MCs perform. Anything else is outside the box.

maybe i should book you and the bug and see how empty the dancefloor is

When the collective mind snaps to the music changes every minute or two, its hard to create or maintain a vibe. When your mind no longer snaps to the changes in the music due to constant flow, people will dance for hours on end.jagermikester wrote:since when is mixing/beat matching records=being a DJ?
Think about where the 'DJ' came from.
or just google it!
Then we spit em out of our warehouse back onto the streets at 8am Sunday morning wondering where all the time went.....

My take is that the show should be fun and that the music should be presented as "musically" as possible. Rodigan doesn't mix, and though I've never seen him personally, his shows look like a blast and he's a total legend. I've also seen "DJ's" beatmatch seamlessly on Ableton and bore the shit out of people.
I really wanted to have fun watching and dancing to The Bug, and I tried, but it didn't happen...

im not trying to say that mixing or typical style djing is essential to a good set
what im saying is that the show straight up sucked, from whichever way you look at it
from the dj/dancing perspecitive: no mixing, no consistency, no energy
from the musical perspective: it was simply unenjoyable, i didnt dig the tracks he played regardless of whether he mixed them smoothly or not.they were too drowned in effects to enjoy anyway. also flowdans mic was up way to high in comparison to the music.

Im not a huge fan of MCs to begin with, i especially hate them
flapping their gums about nonsense while im trying to work the crowd
into the vibe with the music ive selected.
music typically comes in two flavors, lyrics being the vehicle for the message
and the main tool for creating emotional response, or simply the music being
the vehicle for the same emotional response. That being said, an MC
better have some pretty important shit to say to justify yelling over
a style of music which is more known for lack of lyrics than not.
When you get 3 MCs trying to do their thing over a DJ who could apparently
care less about the flow of his set, the word which immediately comes to mind would be: Cacophony
Furthermore, if you dont play to make people vibe to your style and/or dance, why are you even bothering besides to stoke your own ego as a "performer"?

while i love the bugs tunes i cant say ive ever really enjoyed his live sets, too noisy for me, all kaos pad and no vibe - but then thats to be expected i suppose. Warrior queen is an amazing live mc though and has managed carry the vibe on the last few sets i have seen them play. His sets at Bash (his night with Loefah) are a lot more danceable but not beatmatched.
Also since when did the bug become a dubstep artist? he seemed to toy with the idea when he put out that release as Pressure but you couldnt ever describe him as a dubstep artist (and certainly not dj!)
