Gunshots have been heard in the French town of Dammartin-en-Goele, 40 kilometres from the scene of where police had been hunting two suspects in the killings of 12 people at Charlie Hebdo, reports say.
News agency AFP, quoting security forces, said hostages had been taken at a business in the town north-east of Paris.
The number of people taken hostage was not immediately confirmed.

A huge police operation is under way in a town north-east of Paris as police move in to detain the men suspected of massacring staff at Charlie Hebdo magazine.
Shots were fired earlier as the gunmen hijacked a car.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve confirmed the operation in Dammartin-en-Goele, 35 km (22 miles) from Paris.
At least one hostage has been taken at a warehouse in the small town, French media reports suggest.

1:18 P.M. ISIS cleric says group responsible for Charlie Hebdo attack
A cleric from the Islamic State group claims the radical militia was responsible for the deadly attack on the Paris offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
"We started with the France operation for which we take responsibility. Tomorrow will be in Britain, America and others," Abu Saad al-Ansari said in a sermon in the Islamic State-controlled Iraqi city of Mosul.
