City of God is brilliant..there is a sequel too City of Men which has been released but don't think it has made it to the uk yet. Confusingly, there is a mini series also called City of Men that is very good and based on the favelas.

The book City of God was based on is :o

well weird
is that the ley lines/rainy dog/shinjuku triad society one?

If so, it probably contains his 'straightest' films!! You have a whole treasure trove of the weird and wrong to explore :D
aye thats the one! of his, i've seen gozu, ichi the killer, one missed call and visitor Q (visitor Q - what the fuckity fucking fuck to the power of fuck-ness is going on in miike's head?!)

i thought, out of the three in black society, rainy dog was the best. shinjuku triad societs was a let down, ley lines was pretty good.

he's directed 77 films according to imdb, which other ones are good? nothing like visitor Q please, i wish i hadn't watched that...although the end almost made it worthwhile

any other suggestions for great japanese films? been watching quite a few recently, love the japanese style...completely and utterly different to anything hollywood/uk/anywhere else would turn out

all about watching with subtitles too, none of this dubbed shit. i don't think i've ever laughed as hard as i did when people started shouting in ichi the killer - japanese people shouting and getting angry has to be one of the funniest things i've ever witnessed

i've seen a lot of miike films

check out:

happiness of the katakuris
bird people of china
audition

most of his movies are shit though.

if you wanna see some good japanese shit, check out takeshi kitano's Fireworks (hana-bi). he's got a lot of great movies.

if you like oldschool pulp/exploitation films, you should check out seijun suzuki. branded to kill is a good place to start.

Yeah, I'd agree with Parson, also the Dead or Alive Trilogy and Graveyard of Honour. City of Lost Souls was entertaining as well. If you like the more mad stuff, Fudoh is pretty mental.

Another Japanese director to check is Kiyoshi Kurosawa (who made the original Pulse - although it is far from his best film). He is more philosophical, but his films can be brilliant: Pulse, Bright Future and Charisma are all excellent films.

I've seen it and it annoyed me, was trying too hard to be clever, and failed. I was bored after half an hour.

ohh i've been meaning to get back to that for 10 years. good idear

i'm trying to figure out what order to watch the movies in, and i came across this cool review on imdb:

Anime with a twist., 25 March 2005
Author: bodycry from United States

The Evangelion series is based on some of Sigmund Freuds non discussed theories and banned portions of the Bible that the mainstream do not know about but are well documented. The series points out what the original Bible does, shows the dualities we face in life whereas the homogenized version of the bible(new testament) would have you believe in a more monotheistic point of view. The mention of Lillith in this series which is Adams real first wife in the Bible not Eve as the newer versions of the bible would have you believe. Its hard to comprehend some portions of this Anime series without knowing a little about the unknown portions of the Bible such as the mentioning of Lillth and the Angels and Eva's. The Eva's are humankinds attempt at making the Angels which in the bible fell from heaven. The angels in this interpretation are trying to destroy mankind instead of eating them like in the original bible transcripts(Same idea). This series is a great interpretation of a lot of unknown aspects of the Bible and throwing in a little Freud and some elements of B.F. Skinners take on behaviours(such as the Absolute Terror Field which is created by children without a strong Female in their life, usually males Frued states abused children can create an AT barrier to keep others away)(Hypotheticaly but in this series it visually appears as a shield or as an attack weapon as in the knife). On the outside this is a great animated movie by studio Gainax/ studio I.G. but when your dwelve into the actual plot of is so beautifully orchestrated chaos. The game Xenogears was loosely based off this anime although more on the Psych aspect. This series has yet to be matched by any anime. I caught wind of this anime since I'm a big fan of MacrossPlus. I've been an anime fan since my pops went to Japan in the early 80s and always had awesome Mecha toys when he came back. This is a series you cannot passup. Rent them or buy them but take an entire day because you'll want to just watch the entire series all the way thru, its that good.

ohhh this is also cool:
Trivia:
In Gendo Ikari's office in NERV, the large symbol visible on the floor and ceiling are the Tree of Life of Qabbalistic tradition, which contains the Sephiroth, or ten spheres of life. Gendo has his desk positioned directly on top of/below the Sphere of Kether, which represents Infinite Light and Wisdom, Supreme Consciousness, and God.
