I am however surprised to read that 50K sold units are considered a lot these days.

it's hard to ignore commercial music if you have ears. i try my best, i avoid commercial nightclubs like the plague, don't watch mtv or listen to the radio, and yet i always seem to be up to date on the latest chart bollocks. how, i don't know, but it will be impossible not to pay attention to whatever jizz c&s release on universal.
And of course 50k albums is a lot when it's on a (relatively) tiny label like Ram.
