Why do they go in tens?
I mean when you think about it, what is ten? What makes it so much more important?
It could just as easily go:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
11,12, 13, 14 15, 16, 17, 18, 19
21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29
etc..
Why do they go in tens?
I mean when you think about it, what is ten? What makes it so much more important?
It could just as easily go:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
11,12, 13, 14 15, 16, 17, 18, 19
21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29

I'm actually going to assume it goes up in tens because we have ten digits and it makes it a shit ton simpler to teach. It also couldn't go like that, the system wouldn't work without zero as a placeholder!WhosZena? wrote:Numbers...

They still did math pretty similarly which is just boggling! I was actually talking to my roommate about the importance of zero/going up in tens the other day. He's getting his PhD in Philosophy so he had a lot of good stuff to say about it, I'll try and get some other info about it because it was really interesting.

I always thought ten was needed because of the way numbers are indexed by columns. Without the zero, you're forced to change a number's face value... 10 = 1 x 'column of ten' and 'zero' in single digits... If it went 7, 8 ,9, 11 for example, '11' would be used instead of ten, meaning that the arbitary value of '1' has been altered... You can use other numbers as the base (noteably 6 was frequent before ten) as long as principles are followed. Consider it as counting in a tally system, it's the quantity that reveals the 'number' and not the way in which they're recorded. It's a useful labelling sytem that aids in keeping numbers infinite, rather than the arduous task of generating a specific symbol for each number

Tally systems make more sense to me because its visual and the numbers are all exactly the same, apart from the quantity. But if they swapped (IIIII I) and (IIIII II) it just wouldnt be right.
But it still doesn't properly answer why they are grouped in 10s... And about now is when my thoughts get very annoying.

Ahhh I get what you mean. I think the easiest answer is in a parallel universe your equivalent is probably wondering why they use base 6 or something, ha
Maybe it had no real significance, just displayed a lot of useful traits to use the decimal system. It doesn't rule our clocks, however!

And I asked my roommate about it, and he said the accepted theory is that we have groupings of 10 just because of thats how many digits we have, so it just seems like the natural way to do it.
