Re: the ultimate *5 panel techno* thread
Idk if they can. Would enough people come or are most youngsters happy with the £20 + bf pre-packaged 'rave' experience? Would the police not just shut it down instantly anyway? Either way, I don't think i'm anywhere near cool enough to be passing judgement on what's cool and what's not.Harkat wrote:Can't a bunch of kids just go out and set up an illegal rave for the fuck of it anymore? Or is that just proto-hipsterism, just fake coolness one step ahead of the pack?
That's a good point about the over exposure, but even if there is an equal amount of shallowness at least you had to commit and be faithful to whatever genre you picked BITD because of the lack of information. You had to almost live and breathe a genre or risk being discovered as uncool by your peers. Now there's so much information about that any scenester can fake love for music well enough to pass. idk, i'm thinking on my toes here.Pedro Sánchez wrote:I think that has a lot more with how much information the average youngster is fed because of the internet and the faster pace of technology, so less time is spent invested in any one thing. Everything is so instant and over exposed, I don't think they are anymore shallower than previous generations.
And again with the over exposure - all of the dance genres that Harkat mentioned were able to percolate, gather a loyal fan base and gain and ethos because there was no internet around. Dubstep being the exception and we all know what happened there.
Nice onePedro Sánchez wrote:There is a book call The Rebel Sell, give that a read for some insight as to what happened there.Laszlo wrote:Is there really any kind of counter-culture any more? Will the youth stand up for anything coherently again or have they been beaten into conformity?
Re: the ultimate *5 panel techno* thread
I'd be keen to know wub, magma or genny's opinion on this stuff. Are we actually happiest with the pre-packaged rave (or anything we enjoy for that matter) experience or do we need to tyler durden it up?
It feels wrong to just accept that the market running things is the best we can do, but the alternative seems so futile, like Lazlo pointed out.

You don't need to be, the last thing i'd want is for every youngster to feel they have to be part of something like that, i'm just saying, imo, there's a lot of dividing and conquering and there doesn't seem to be a lot of/enough people pushing back. Traditionally this was the role of the youth. I'm just wondering if rebellion has been turned into a expression of conformity and nothing more. Has the prospect of a jobless (short-term) future taken the fight out of the young? What happened?ultraspatial wrote:on a serious note though, why the need to belong to a scene or whatever ?

@Laszlo
i agree with you to an extent, but i think the role of the rebellious youth is highly romanticised.
you could probably "blame" capitalism for being able to turn anything into a good, or you could be cynical about it and say that everything was always a good or a product from the start.

This is probably true. I think i'm just at that difficult age where the rose-tinted glasses are in full affect. Then again I can't really tell because it's very hard to be objective about it.ultraspatial wrote:@Laszlo

But, I am pretty cynical about most things but I don't buy that everything was a product from the start - people didn't innovate in order to sell.

It's like all people wearing the worst 90s stuff again at the moment as if it being 20 years old somehow makes it any better.Agent 47 wrote:haha yeah

Re: the ultimate *5 panel techno* thread
i hope this name catches on outside dsf and becomes a genre on beatport. although i suppose it'll be tough with all of the tru-panel vinyl only's.

Sportwear will be in in '14, based on what they showed at the fasion shows in London/Berlin/Tokyo/Madrid and New York. Even Givenchy does it.
