Re: the techno thread
bake is a sick dj, lot of variety in his sets and cool weird grooves
objekt rarely play his old white labels anymore but don't doubt he will destroy the place

Blawan's remixing Source Direct and the result is painstakingly boring.

Re: the techno thread
been a dub for a while. surprised it's coming out really; tho a nonplus release seems fitting, seeing how sd released the first instramental records.
the tune is ok tho. not really that good, but not really awful, just ok. like most of blawan's output

Re: the techno thread
His stuff on R&S and Hinge Finger is better than okay I think.
I agree about this remix though. I would have retained some of that massive bass line.
Thought this was solid:

Re: the techno thread
objekt was so good, there was a bit where he just played bass for a couple minutes and it was simultaneously unbearable and quite cool

Re: the techno thread
saw A Made Up Sound yesterday and his set was pretty disappointing. first hour was decent, but then he suddenly switched it up to uberhard techno workouts and refused to change gears for the rest of his set despite people quite obviously not vibing to it and leaving. luckily enough, the resident who was on after him picked it up and played a really tight, heavy set, escalating the party to outer space.

Re: the techno thread
I never know how to feel when djs do that, one on hand yeah they're kinda being obtuse but at the same time, I think it's good to be a little uncompromising with your selections (sometimes?)
also yeah, would've rather had some more of the source direct vibe come through in that blawan remix. don't get the point of doing a remix like that when you just make it sound like any other old track of yours

Re: the techno thread
yes phigs, I was a bit conflicted over this matter aswell.
I came to the conclusion that one can still play an uncompromising set AND keep it interesting and engaging; either because you're just doing your thing and the crowd loves you eitherway (Chris Liebing comes to mind) or by playing whatever you want and still keep the party going (Ben UFO, mayhaps. I'm sure there are better examples though). playing 135bpm techno in a club full of non-rotterdamese people who aren't losing their shit already and, as a DJ, refusing to switch it up is just stubborn. 'cept it didn't seem like stubborness but rather him not exactly knowing how to play the crowd. he didn't play very out-there music; maybe it would've been better had he been on at 6am instead of 2-4. it bored a lot of people very rapidly, not hitting the right keys at the right time plus not delivering something special to make up for it... difference between decent DJs and very good DJs, I guess?

I really want to hear that set now haha.
Saw him at an acid thing two months back. Felt a little stale, but he had
to follow Ceephax..
Speaking of Rotterdam. Developer apparently operates his new label project from there.

hmmm I really like the black rose remix, heard surgeon play it a while back and the place went nuts.
also really feeling the previews of the next horizontal ground, best thing they've put out in a while.

This is a project from my housemate, thought i'd see if it gets any love here

there's 2 ways of looking at djs imo: either as mini curators (playing whatever the fuck they want, regardless if the crowd likes it or not), or as entertainers (this includes both the "good"/"skilled" dj that knows what to play & when, and just playing bait shit the whole night). actually it's more like a scale with each option on one end, cause obviously there's going to be a lot of middle ground. not to mention it's all highly variable, depending on the night, moods, each individual's perception etc.
but anyway, it's a bit unfair to say a dj didn't do his job just cause you weren't feeling it. maybe he/she doesn't think of him/herself as being an entertainer and acts accordingly. at the end of the day, that person is booked to do what he/she thinks is best to do. it's a bit like going to a restaurant and telling the waiter or chef to surprise you and then complain you didn't like the food. not really their fault imo - unless of course they served you something they knew was bad. obviously it's a bit more grey when it comes to producer djs, because they can get bookings off the strength of their tunes, not necessarily because of their dj skills
Re: the techno thread
bake was really good, batu too (it's his night) bake dropped into a little hip hop excursion as well starting that with pharcyde-runnin, felt like a nice change from tha boom boom
it's strange, dudes in this thread have always been so on point when i've asked about djs and i've loved the nights i've hit this past year, but still i can't listen to techno when i'm at home, got no urge to dig deeper outside of nights (beyond a surface scraping amount of peverelist, livity, hodge and more 130ish bits)
