Re: the classic "take a photo of your setup" thread
LOL... no car shops, I dare say the name is not unique.
Speaker on left is PMC IB1S and the smaller one is a Dynaudio Acoustics BM6P, I have used the BM6P for a lot of my engineering career
lots of recording and mixing work so know them very well indeed and I still think they offer useful information so they stay.
Not suitable for mastering on their own though. IB1S are great, very serious monitors, large scale and very accurate and immense low end output
capability. Seriously, at 85dB SPL they are so clean they don't even sound loud until 100dB SPL +.
cheers

I was gonna ask if PMC use Dynaudio drivers for a sec, but you explained.
Re: the classic "take a photo of your setup" thread
I'm sorry, I have no idea how monitors work - are the big ones nearfield? And why don't you just use the IB1S for everything?safeandsound wrote:LOL... no car shops, I dare say the name is not unique.

Re: the classic "take a photo of your setup" thread
Hi, well there is no such thing as a really perfect loudspeaker, (though the PMC IB1S approaches it IMO) it's good to grasp this as then you are starting from the basis that you still need to understand a speakers strengths and weaknesses in your exact environment/acoustic. Now you might think that I would stand up and say the PMC IB1S are the ultimate blah.. blah.. but the fact is all loudspeakers have reproduction problems inherent which is largely down to the design constraints of multiple drivers, crossovers, baffle width, amplification ambiguities, dispersion (including the room), stereo image, enclosure/bracing, bass reflex, sealed box, transmission line, room positioning etc. It's just that some speakers have less problems. That happens to be those that have had a fair few 10's of thousands of $$$ thrown at the initial design stage and component selection, so the good ones tend to cost. Once you are hitting £4,000.00-£5,000.00 most problems are ironed out. Don't get me wrong the PMC IB1S is an excellent mastering speaker *using a custom 10 inch fibre glass woofer of PMC's own design, a dome mid range by Vifa (and a tweeter by Scanspeak/Vifa I think).
I could work solely with the IB1S as they present scale, useable accuracy, extended bottom end to 25Hz and detail. Scale is an important but fairly infrequently mentioned factor which I cottoned onto after about a week of owning them. But I could not work solely on Dynaudio BM6P ( a great near field in it's own right) however they do offer a perspective into lower mids that believe the IB1S don't, so for this area they serve as useful addition to the studio.
The IB1S could be termed a mid field where the BM6P is a near field speaker.
In mastering the less guess work the better.

Had to listen to your stuff after seeing that. Your bandcamp is fantastic. Can you explain a bit about what's going on in your setup? Looks like you've got a 4-track and a DJ controller in there!!

For that show I had everything running through Ableton, which was set up with two audio input tracks, a midi track, and four more audio tracks just for clips. The main thing I use is the MDP32, who's pads are all mapped to launch clips, and the knobs and buttons are mapped to track volumes, sends, effects, etc. The MIDI keyboard is just used on one song so far, so I just have it going into that one MIDI track, same with the guitar, it just goes into the audio track with an amp modeling vst on it. That is indeed a Tascam Portastudio

I like recording in dark areas. HAHA not because its depressing, but because in my opinion you hear better in dimly lit places.
