deafblindmusic wrote:@fluidmoshun : Aint No Sunshine - dude, excellent idea! I want to hear heavier on the drop though, like much much heavier...but that's because I love the counterpoint of nice and subtle with monster. The lead sound kind kills the vibe, it's really loud. Percussion needs to come up a lot, snare needs more bite for my ear. Perc pattern is nice and clean though. Keep going!
Thanks deaf. I just finished making some hash :D so tomorrow or sunday I plan on locking myself in for 4-5 hours and making some serious progress. I was really proud of the lead part when I wrote it, do you think it would fit if I just brought the volume down?

@Hero: I'mlistening on my laptop, but I love atmospheric songs where sounds have meaning and thats exactly what you made :W:

@mthrfnk 1st one, the drop is a bit empty imo, add a warm pad sound to it and I think it would sound much better. I like the dnb, have nothing critical to say on it.

@Ematyael the bass sound is too abrupt coming in to the intro, fade it in a little bit. also, the voice is unclear to me and so are the basslines. a bit too dirty imo.

@I am Cook I LOVE THOSE GLITCHY SOUNDS but some of the notes aren't flowing. I think its the sub bass. I like the vibe of the track though, man. I don't know how to describe it, but the feeling is familiar.

@wizardd am digging those intro pitch down effects, definitely dope. Dope track! But drums are too quiet, barely hear em!

Here's an old tune of mine, it is finished, but I'm not asking for feedback on the tune, I am asking for feedback on what I did to the tune. This is an A-B comparison for my self-mastering and would like to know what you guys think of my mastering 'skills' am I good or bad?

@Hero - love the arrangement and the drums. the basses could use some tweaking, and I would mix them louder and the drums a bit quieter. also see if you can come up with a few more incidentals to fill out the track
@Rebel - damn that arpeggio and bassline are bouncy as fuck. I love the samples as well. I would tightening up the bass and adding a little more midrange in there, but overall I like where this is going
@Samourai - not bad for a first tune. you're obviously feeling out the drum patterns and how to arrange bass. I say next work on adding in some melodies and see if that leads you to some more dynamic bass patterns. keep at it

this is a tune I started at work this afternoon and have been tweaking all evening. it's not exactly dubstep, it's 92 bpm, but it has a dubby bassline so what the hell

vocals are andy milonakis

@hoborg - haha love the vocals, nice synths in the intro, cool hip hop type beat. vocals are sounding a bit harsh in the high freq range, wicked ideas in this tune bro, the bass line is a lil boring, and lacking a bit of sub bass, but has a sweet flow to it none the less, keep working hard bro, will be a nice sounding track once its done.

@Jriseal - the bass in the intro is distorting a lil bit. i like the intro tune, whoooo every thing is clipping hard out in the build up need to sort the levels out a bit, i really dig your bass line bro, tis farken heavy!!! your kick is cliping a lil bit and the snare is getting lost behind the bass, but if you sort these things out you will have a phat tune on your hands, big up bro!!!

@Rebel - cool vocal smaple, boom !!!! love the drop, has a real cool old school feel to the bass line, one thing i would say, its a bit repetitive, but your production is'nt to bad, keep working at bro.

@ematyael - you really need to work on your mix down, the drums almost disappear when the bass kicks in, and your high freqs are a bit harsh, i get your vibe bro, keep working at it.

here is my latest tune, the intro is a bit boring at the mo, will crank it up , and i will also change things up after the drop to keep it interesting, just keen to here whats peps think so far

@crow steppa: you did a good job, i just expected something else after that ''drop'' haha. very nice intro tho, !
@espy: im not a fan of that house ish thing haha but thats just my opinion and my thinking! nothing on the mixing and producing tho! happy tune!
@hoborg: i really like the vocals, and the bounce in your tune puts a smile on my face.. it's a happy tune! haha
@hero: im not a big fan of that wobble sound but i find what you've made very original.. it's mixed well! i'd play it :) keeep up

so this is something me and my friend worked on.. know we still have to do more on the intro and drop! but its a start! feedback please!

@darkdubz hmm, the drops comes in kind of wierd, try reducing that echo on the vocals when it drops, i love the bassline though
@Hoborg awesome beat, try changing around the bassline a bit though
@Hero super chill, but try to fit in some more background melody

heres an update from my latest one, got some new drums so i think its going well, dont know what else to add really, so fire away with feedback :D

I figured I'd post an update on my previous WIP some parts still needs reworking but the track itself is basically complete I just need to make everything sound crisp, sort the levels and attempt to master it. So any feedback on it would be great:

Soundcloud

Btw @Espy, yes the sample is someone breathing fast, got it from Freesound.org and chopped it up and used it throught the track.

Feedback for others:
@Espy: Nice start, the arp is nice and the small little elecro-y wubs are nice. The whole buildup is nice, esp the panning. Imo the drop needs to be heavier though, try adding some more bass or raising the master volume slightly when it hits?

@Samourai: Your patterns and snth work seem good, but its not really a track if that makes sense, you need to add a build up and breakdown. Also try adding in some pads or midrange around your bass.

@FluidMoShun: Much nicer, but I still think the high pitched part overpowers everything and sounds out of place. The wubs sounds really nice with the sample now though. I'd suggest softening up the high pitched part so it gels more, maybe also add some pads that on a chord progression that follows the main lead to help soften up the treble and punch up the drums.

@Hero: First off, whats the original song :O I really like what you did with this track, but I'd like to hear more vocals in the mid section. Also the end part doesn't seem to fit right with the rest of the track, the melody just doesn't seem right to me.

@jrisreal: To me it sounds like what you did was good, but I'm a total noob at mastering so can't really add much technical advice.

@Hoborg: Your track is just amusing :P It's cool. The bass goes really well at the end too.

@darkdubz: Nice solid track, to me the kick seems to drown out when the bass comes in, although that might just be my headphones failing.

@Saharadubstep: Imo your bass needs pepping up, its really repetive, try and switch up the patterns and you need to punch up your drums since the melody drowns them.

@Swaggr: Your melody is so sweet, what synth did you make it in? Your drop needs to be heavier imo, apart from that I'm liking it, esp the speedup at the end, you should totally break it down after that and add a heinous drop back into the original first section stuff.

@mthrfnk Sounds really good to me, but the bass sound is too distorted I think. Also, the mix sounds kinda weak in the sense that instruments that have been eq'd have lost some of their power, so ease off of the eq just a bit. But thats a very creative idea to incorporate that breathing into it...big ups!

@Swaggr I am in love with your intro dude! Great job! The drop is sick, too! Not a huge fan of the bass patch, though.

@SaharaDubstep it sounds really dirty. I'm referring to the mix, clean that up man, you got noise like crazy! Song isn't my cup of tea but the idea isn't bad.

@darkdubz lol thanks, but I was asking about my mastering technique not the song lol. And that bass isn't distorting, thats just how the bass sounds...its from the DSF Sample Pack 30 Competition. I like the dark vibe of your track and the cool sounds but the drums could flow better in certain parts, like the snare fills could have a small amount of swing/offset to simulate human error

Here's my Neurofunk WIP. Twice as long, now and the drums are stronger and the mix is cleaner. Also the second half is glitchy. And I beefed up the track with my mastering 'skills'.

A new version of the song I posted earlier. Thank you guys for all the positive feedback!
Soundcloud

My feedback:
@jrisreal - Really amazing! I love the dynamics of the bass, with a good building intro this would be a massive drop!

@mthrfnk - Powerful man! And really original with the breathing, I instantly thought of that one Prodigy video where they were all running on the streets, lol.

@Hoborg - That bass has a really nice sound and I like the tempo too, nothing wrong with experimenting with tempos me thinks.

@johnkimble actually not so much amateur, I like the way everything sounds fresh and reverbed just right like if it was a color, it would be minty blue. Only thing I would recommend is some feedback for three other people man.

You're very welcome, nothing worse than being a producer in the wilderness, not knowing if people are digging what you're doing (and if they aren't, what input can they give) etc. All critique, whether positive or negative is useful to me - as long as it's mostly objective :)

Right, with that being said:

@hero : 1965 : Very different, I really dig the vibe, I am listening on laptop speakers right now so I can't make any assessment on the mix (or sub), but I really like the little flourishes and clean perc, that snare may need to come down a little. The lead bass sound is unnecessary in my opinion, rather stick with that dusty ambience you're got going on with the little snippets of piano etc. Play with the effects, delay etc and really amp the dusty parts up.

@jisreal : Self Mastering : The A/B is pretty noticeable in terms of limiting (you can see it in the waveform particularly). Honestly (disclaimer: on laptop speakers) the unmastered one has a little more presence to my ear, but I'll have to be on monitors to fully appreciate the difference. Both sound clean to me.

@jisreal : First neurofunk : Stutters/glitch I like (duh, obviously ). Try pulling those hats down just a tad, or sidechaining them to the kick so they rise up after the kick hits, basically get more of a pump on the hats.

@hoborg : Pussy Pussy Pussy Marijuana : Jangly perc I like. I can't hear the sub on my Etymotic's but they shelf off at 40hz, but even so the 2nd harmonic should be there. The whole mix sounds very dry too, needs a little reverb to give it some lushness. The lead bass and melody are pretty good, the build up is good - the drop just lets the build down.

@darkdubz: Rise Up : Interesting build up, liking the stuttered/reversing bass leads and panning percussion fills/distored bassline. Like the little vocal snippets too. I could see this working in a headnodding club situation.

@saharadubstep : Moan : Where's that rap from? I'd like more of a build to the drop, it kinda just...starts. Look at some automation on the lead filtered bass sound, ripe with options there, in 2/4 bar switches - even just moving the cutoff around would give it some interest. Good so far.

@mthfnk : The Runner : The snare is suppppppppppppper (did I mention SUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPER?) compressed. More like drum and bass to me (that's perfectly good :D). I like the little breathing snippets. Bassline ripping around 2minutes in I like. Look for some opportunities to cut things out and bring them back in to give it some more interest.

@amiran : Dubby : Lead sound at 1:35, ow resonance! Like the actual melody, but look to pull it down. Everything else from a mix perspective sounds pretty good to me.

@johnkimble : Questions : I like, headnodding. Good deep sub on it too. Too short for me to give you more objective feedback, but from what I've heard, I like.

Warlord : Like the conga percussion work and the samba swing on stuff, interesting -you thinking of any other melodic elements?

....and I'm spent

You're welcome to mate, that's why it's a free D/L ;-) , the mixdown is nowhere near as good as my newest track, still learning lessons, but I'd love feedback on improving the mixdown. I know the snare needs more punch, I'll probably swap the percussion out tomorrow and re-mix/master it. Definitely let me know how it goes down cos it's not your "typical" dubstep track
