Yeah, slowly upgrading my setup. Need to sort out a bag for it (costs quite a lot ) and get some cheap headphones which can easily be modified into some fur ear protection for my dummy head. Then I'll be able to do some outdoor binaurals

Well I wasn't planning on bringing a 12-pack just for myself, a 6-pack will do fine

Yeah ok, I want it mainly to protect the recorder when out in the field. I'm not gonna take it out without a bag and definitely wont put it on the ground naked. It would be dead with in a few months I think, not because it delicate as fuck, it's build to last, but not it's not cool when moisture or sand get in it

they may actually make a custom case for that (fostex or someone else) that allows you just access to the face or top or inputs with velcro or zippered up panels (seen em for other stuff mainly rack though)

Yes, but from what I could see it has been discontinued, kinda stupidbut there are alot of bags for recorders, unfortunately most of them are above my budget atm. I'll just keep looking

honestly bags are piss easy to make if you know how to sew and the supplies to make them are cheap as hell (including padding zippers etc)

Yeah don't think it's hard, definitely an option as I'm into DIY aswell
Think I'm gonna give that a go and see how it works out. This way I can customize it to my exact needs

yea i tend to go the DIY route as much as possible unless i can get something manufactured for cheap (like i got that mixer bag at cost when i worked at GC)

what pattern mics do you use when recording binaurally out of curiousity? omni?

Yeah omni, primo EM158 capsules (electret) to be precise. Build into the ears of a mannequin head, running them on P48/balanced XLR outs through a small circuit i've build.

ah i was just brainstorming how to make a wearable setup for capturing say natural ambiances like walking through the city, nature, firing range etc commonly found in games or movies. probably could be done for really cheap

What you just described was my first build and yes it can be done very easily and for cheap. Taken a pic of it for you. The black little dot is the mic capsule. This is a panasonic wm-61a, they are dirt cheap. S/N around 60dB, which is not very quiet, but I've gotten very good results with it. Very flat freq response though. What i've done is bought some of the cheapest headphones, those small ones which don't go over the ear completely (see pic). Any model which can be opened easily (as you need to close them again) will do. Open them, cut the small speakers, drill a small hole of the diameter of the caps and solder them to the cut leads. Close them and your done. They work pretty good on plug-in-power through the original 1/8" jack of the phones into a pocket recorder like the Zoom H1, which i've used them with. Will cost you around $10.

ah i was thinking more along the lines of say shooting earmuffs, and some karma silver bullet mics, that way you have true xlr, though you'll need phantom power
