It's versatile, I really like it for just classic beat making. Sample some sounds, some drums (I usually transfer dilla drums on the card), and just get to it. Keep a synth next to you, for further sounds.
The thig I like the most about the 404sx, is just taking a break from computer based production. Honestly I'm a bit hooked on the control available on he comp, but too much time on there and you kind of get burned out or uninspired.
I like to get off the computer, get on my kitchen table, with the little 404, an iPad or microkorg.
Just magic happens. The limitations of the 404, requires work arounds, I don't even use the sequencer, just start with the musical sample, play and tweak that, chop it up, the fx can seriously transform your sounds, I like screwing on there. Then resample to a pad playing the beat. Once that is resampled, resample again while playing drums over the beat.
At that point copy that pretty stacked beat to a few pads, and chop and fx segments of that beat.
Now do another round of resampling, playing that beat with its variations.
Then maybe drop in some atmo synths, incidentals, things to emphasize the beat or to break it up, bass if you need it. Fx that stuff.
Now all you're fx should be baked in to everything, play the beat and resample and do those synth pads , atmos, incidentals.
Then smash the whole mix with a little vinyl fx, then smash with its dirty comp into the computer.
Now it is so smashed, prolly have to do drum reinforcement if ur as dirty as me.
