Hi. Im just going to start out and say dont use the ultrabeat. It sounds crazy it being a drum programmer, but it actually has a fault... it fades in samples around 4-6 mileseconds even with the amplitude envelope attack set to 0. Its a shame but you do loose that snap transient. I read it over on the logic pro help forums. The exs24 is a much easier solution anyway, seeing as most of the time you dont need all the added filters etc available in ultrabeat... I personally use native instruments battery 3. Its gor the right mix of power as a drum machine and the complexity of a modern sampler with drum articulations etc... have a peep.- mattkHoff wrote:Depone do you use ultrabeat or exs24 for drums? I'm using ultrabeat and mixing it by sending them to aux channels but still seem to be struggling with shaping a decent sounding kick, it always sounds to high even with a test oscilator sub side chained to it. so i guess my questions are what should the velocity of my kicks be, and how loud should they be after compression/limiters/enveloper?
Thanks in advance !

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
Actually I've just encountered an issue I've never come across before... I've tried googling it but I don't really know the correct way to term it (I tried "Logic Pro precise movement/slicing").
Basically the issue is that I've recently recorded a project at another studio, other than my own, and the key commands from there have travelled with the project to home. They're all pretty fine as I've set them up in that studio to my taste before, but the precise movement/slicing (usually done holding the ctrl key whilst doing so) isn't working
I'm opening one of my own projects and doing a keyboard command export now... But it would be nice to know what the title of this key command is in the key commands window if anybody knows?
EDIT: Cracked it.... It's just that the snap wasn't set to 'smart'

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread / LATENCY ISSUE
Heres one for the architecture and algoryhthm savvy people...
i tend to make very long chains of bussed bass signals... its something ive been working on for a while now... the results would be similar to cleaver resampling, however... it gives me a creative edge over my resampling self... and i enjoy it...
ive been mangling a lot with massive, simply cause its a modulation-friendly tool... so id have a basic massive patch, with a lot of its parameters modulated... going thru 2 dozens of busses... (typical resampling schemes, splittin freqs.. etc...
this technique suits me well... it really adds to my creativity
my question :
when bouncing, i find out my patch doesnt modulate the same way it does during playback.. its like if playback had a stable latency that would affect the modulation, which doesnt reflect on the bounced parts... the result is a very offbeat and non musical bounced wavefile, simply because my patterns are constructed during playback (outcome doesnt equal playback)....
the only workaround ive found is to sample the playback audio stream into my hardware sampler and rebounce it into the daw..
i often resample by bouncing in place or by bussing to a record enabled audio track... hwv both give me the same unpromising results
but im starting to wonder... if there is a way for me to optimize logic to minimize the difference between playback and bouncing.
- should i buy some extra ram?
- should i learn how to set the buffersize properly (which i never touch)?
- wasnt there something about latency compensation !?! could it help, how?
- anyone experiences something similar!?!?!
Thx much!!!

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
Are you bouncing in real time? If not - I'd recommend trying that first.
Secondly, with a lot of modulation effects such as flanging. chorus etc the algorithms are close to random & they do change slightly in playback.
There isn't any reason why a bounce should be significantly different to a playback if you're bouncing in real time.
Regarding latency there is something you can select (comes automatically sorted in Logic I think, unlike Pro Tools) which is called 'Plug-In Compensation' if this isn't on then I think you would notice this in playback as opposed to a bounce, but it's definitely worth having ticked in pretty much any case...

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
two questions, any one made drum kits using es2 and ultrabeat? if so any tips on plugs/programming, im getting a nice ish sound from the es2 but im now into experimentation stage of 'shaping' and 'processing' so if there is anything you've stumbled across that you like doing/always do to your synth drum samples would be nice!
second Q, i use a multi output ultrabeat for my drums then do a bit of effecting and then send then to a 'drum bus' for overall processing but i was wondering two things, would you deselect the original output of each hit so that the only signal to the master is from the 'drum bus'? and, lets say you've sent all the hats to a bus for eq (for example) do you ever then send the signal from the verb bus to further busses or is it always sent from the original track?
thanks!

and to your second question; yes.
i use the multi output have my different aux channels for each different instrument (kick x2-3.. a few snares, hats and the list goes on) to EQ and adjust the volume each individual sound. send it all to 3 aux/bus channels to split the frequencies. than send to a drum bus. i sometimes have to drum bus' to use one as a gate or any other special shit like that.

i need suggestions for this.

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
made a topic already, but probably should have asked it in here first. Sorry bout that
So i download this load of free samples, without noticing there are in mp3 format. Is there a way to load them in the EXS24 sampler? I'm getting pretty desperate. Also, how do i apply inserts to one sample at a time?
Thanks!

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
^ not extremely pertinent here but ill turn it logic-ish...
logic allows u to convert mp3s to wav or aiff.. but one at a time.. i dont know if it could do batch conversion... for that i use an mp3 to wav converter...
if you decide to do it thru logic.. make sure u check out the project folder cause the bin might make things heavier by converting ur stuff without u even knowing it... (from there u could decide to bounce as wav or export as wav without even noticing its already somewhere on ur drive)...
good logic hygiene is a must...

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
i would be lazy and drag the samples from finder into Logic's arrange window (chuck them on some audio tracks). Logic will convert them all automatically. Then just open the 'edit' window on an EXS, select them all in Logic and drag them all in. BingoRmoniK wrote:made a topic already, but probably should have asked it in here first. Sorry bout that

if you want to effect one sample at a time then you would want to use a multi-output EXS, and you can assign each sample to a group and each group to a different channel.

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
I have a question. I'm still pretty new so sorry if this comes out confusing. Anyways I just recently learned a little about side chaining and I've been sending my kicks to an aux channel (bus 1), then putting a compressor on that channel. Then I put a compressor on my bass and sidechain it to bus 1 so that when my kicks hit, it lowers the dynamics of the bass, helping my kicks stand out, as well as giving some cool effects to the bass. I'm pretty sure I'm doing this the right way but now I have a problem.
I have a synth that sort of drowns out my shakers and my snare. So if I want to have both the shakers and snare stand out a bit more over the synth, how would I accomplish this? Would I just need to send the shakers and snare both to the same aux channel using the same bus as a send. Then give the synth a compressor and side chain it to that bus. Is it that simple or is there more to it.
When I learned how to do this with the kicks and bass I was taught to give the kick a compressor on the aux. channel it was sent to. So if having a compressor on that channel is necessary, then how would I give the snare and shakers a compressor without having to give them both the same comp. settings?

These are general production questions, but no worries ill answer them anyways.inDistinkt wrote:I have a question. I'm still pretty new so sorry if this comes out confusing. You dont need the compressor on the same channel as your kick bus (Bus 1). and you need to turn its output off (under the I/O labels on your mixer)
This is just a 'trigger' aux and should not be heard in the song. its only purpose is to trigger the other compressor on your bass.
No that might do it, but before turning to sidechaining, which in my opinion should be used in small quantities, try EQ first. Taking out the frequencies your snare / hats occupy in the pad, might just make it muffled and bad, so try change the octave of your pad, either lower or higher to stop the collision. This is a decision any good producer has to make, to fit all his elements into the mix.I have a synth that sort of drowns out my shakers and my snare. Im not sure what your asking here. Can you explain more in detail? When I learned how to do this with the kicks and bass I was taught to give the kick a compressor on the aux. channel it was sent to. Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
Thanks a lot for taking the time to help me. Sorry about the general question, next time I'll make sure to keep it Logic only when in this thread.
After reading your response and doing a little research I found out I had the basic idea, but was just doing a few things wrong. I understand what to do now though. And as for the last part of the question, you can disregard that lol. For some reason I thought a compressor was also needed on the triggers bus, which is why I was confused about using 2 triggers to duck one sound.
And for my shakers/snare problem, I'll try out the methods you suggested and see what sounds best. Thanks again man.

Re: The Logic Q&A Thread
quick question. how would I be able to record the sounds from my hardware synth into logic? I have tried adding a new "External Midi" track didn't work and I have tried inserting the "External Instrument" au in Logic to an Instrument track and to no avail. help is much appreciated. And, yes I have my hardware synth hooked up via midi-to-usb cable
