Very messy but the growl movement sounds a lot like that signature Skrillex growl. You're on the right track, and I'm wondering how you got that movement? And maybe the patch too

Hes right, Agu is on the right path. ONe of those, the one in the middle, sounds a bit like one of the scary monsters, the SCHRLIA-GRAUGH one (not the AUUUUW one).

HOw did you make the movement?
I need to stop changing my sig

Hey, finally got soundcloud

Ok, so the basic sound is coming from Thor in Reason. Theres no special waveforms, it's just 3 saw waves and a slight touch of frequency modulation. Movement comes from automation (eq, pitch bend, wt-position, filter cutoffs/resonance, FM mod amounts, gain etc.), mostly from automated eq right before distortion with two big spikes moving so that when other is moving down the frequencies, other one is going up and same thing the other way. The wavetable position is effective too because it morphs the wave smoothly between sine, triangle, square, saw (with basic waveforms, with complex waveforms 1 point difference can make everything sound shit). This allows you to control the "harshness" of the sound.

Even that I don't have the patch file anymore, I can remember that the FX chain was long as hell and it included vocoder with "equalizer" mode on just to shape the sound and some bitcrushing in the end of the chain to add some crunch and take off some of the highest frequencies.

The different variations in the sound comes from resampling. I think i first actually pitched the entire audio clip down by 1 semitone. After that I cut the clip to pieces and did some editing: the "Baaauuuww" in the middle at 00:03 or something is just a reversed version of the big growl in the start of the clip. The "SCHRLIA-GRAUGH" and the small growl at the end of the are just small timestrecthed, pitched and maybe reversed slices from the original clip.

I think that my main problem, that Shageed also mentioned, is my growls nearly always ending up messy. If not, they end up too tiny and weak. Surgical eqing and removing the low end helps to clean up some of it, but in this case after 20 eq cuts I thought fuck it and let it be.

I have not been on DSF in a longgg while. And I havent made a growl in even longer (i've been making less dubstepyy music for the last half a year)

what do you guys think?
fm8 and mostly FL built in filters.

I honestly forgot how to get a more vowely texture out of growls, lmao. So this is the best I could get in about 20 minutes. I may make a legit project out of this.

You're the man.
Tried the hook tecnique today, took a kick and looped it really fast, distorted, eq'd, modulated, etc.
Got something similar to that Terror Squad growl, really Dry sounding, but nothing skrillexy.

How the fuck do you create the high end? Like the Crude wavetable, how was that shit made?
BSSHIIII. How?
I think I have the Barely Alive growl ... or at least super Close!!! :6:

I like it but i think its not uniformed enough..your growls seem over distorted or distorted on bands it shouldnt be..

Im literally matching my waveforms to his. Also using izotope Iris and taking background noise out of his growls to hear just his growls ... The only things i have wrong with my growl is the vowel form and the width in stereo.. possibly some equalizing. But I believe we're both on the right track with it!

Yeah i noticed how my growl sounds almost like airy, i dont have ohmicide right now so i was using camel crusher this could be part of the problem, i love the vowel movement in my growl but yours really has that BA thickness that everyone loves so much. I have been working out of massive mostly though so that could also be part of the problem, although the sedated growl was made in massive. Im going muster up some cash and get ohmicide and see if i can do better with that will keep posted, we are very close to getting the growl. :Q:

I might just keep it this way from now on though! I think sounding like Barely Alive would be a stupid thing to do! :a: I want my own sound to it.. I'm far too close to their growl which takes away from my own work.

I think the best point to this thread is to learn the process of making the growl but then use your own creativity to come up with something totally different! ;-)

Dont know if youve tried this yet but try throwing a high resonated high pass filter on that and automate it according to the rest of the vowel movement, seriously this is the closest fucking growl ive heard, im thinking that hp might just what it needs to be like exactly like BA

The original sound is coming from operator with pitch bending which gives a lot of movement, next, you can use abletons formant eqs in a chain of an instrument rack, it's important to put overdrive after the formant eqs because then it makes the formant effect more solid, next in another chain you just want an overdrive to bring the original synth through and finally a bit of phase and distortion and you get this result :)
