I ask because when I used to meet up way back when during irc days I was called Griffen.
When I met folks they called me Griff.
Over time as I got to know these folks and hung out offline, they still called me Griff.
Which I find strange.

I guess it depends on if you have a "real" name in your username aswell.
Im not called John Lenham but anyone I deal with online just assumes im called John, rather than it being a nick name I was given :)
