Out of interest : Why do you think people would choose to communicate via relatively ambiguous symbols rather than clear and precise language over secure channels? That's my major stumbling block with all this.... sure, I could find patterns anywhere.... but why would anyone bother?

Many underground organisations (for instance Cosa Nostra) communicate perfectly well through more traditional, yet secure, techniques... why would anyone choose to limit themselves to such an arcane language as this? Is it simply pretension in your eyes or is there more to it?
