You can do it with a different vocoder too, doesn't have to be the FL one.

yeah i know, i've had a crack with the ableton vocoder but i haven't got close yet. kill the noise is on ableton and i'm sure i can hear him using vocoders, wonder if he's managed his tricks with the ableton default.

@Rymphony, mind explaining your Sytrus settings? I keep trying to get similar sounds but mine always turn up sounding too distorted and harsh rather than harmonic and "wet" like your preview.

Thx bud :)

don't automate anything too much, slight automations are good for that kind of sound. and obviously play low notes

What's up bros ;) Haha, I've been meaning to post in here for a while! Kept on forgetting. I make my vowel for my bass in massive by running parallel notch filters. Idk, check it out if you like it I can show you what to do. This is just massive and Ohmicide. Didn't really put a lot of effort into processing it, wasn't sure if it's what you guys are looking for.

Hey guys, only recently bought FM8 (also got sytrus) so I'm pretty new to the concept of FM but I understand the idea behind it. Could one of you shed some light in how you achieve the growls in FM? I'm pretty well versed in sound design and processing otherwise, just curious on whether you just use the FM to get a gnarly sound and then filter and process as usual or if there's some untapped potential in automating the FM or something thats otherwise unique to FM synthesis.

You can get the basics of a good growl in fm8 by routing a formant over a sine wav. You can use an envelope or you can automate the parameter to get the basic sound. Any combination of formants can get you cool results. As for post processing, everyone suggests eq automation. If you aren't looking to go as deep and want to keep things a little less tedious, I found you can get a good vowel from double notch filters! A little phase can go a long way as well!
