I stayed at a Hare Krishna temple for a week and there were openly gay (though celibate) monk. Never heard any anti-Semitism. Women are generally kept seperate from men, but I think it worked both ways; it was because "men will tempt women" as well as "women will tempt men". Its true that they are pretty conservative and creationist...But they were still some of the nicest, most welcoming people I've ever met. If someone wants to believe that a blue bloke playing the flute created the world or if someone wants to believe that it was all a random explosion aeons ago...I don't really care, so long as they are nice to each other and the world.

As with everything though we can't judge an entire religion by the acts of a few. If this whole fucked up incident has taught us anything, it should be that labels are so unhelpful and just lead to misinformation, prejudice and hate. To say that "Hare Krishnas are homophobic", or indeed that "Hare Krishnas are not homophobic" is such a huge generalisation to be meaningless. All we can really say is that "some Hare Krishnas are homophobic sometimes", and then we can begin to interact with them as the individual, unique human beings that they are.

Truth can come to you only when your mind and heart are simple, clear, and there is love in your heart; not if your heart is filled with the things of the mind. When there is love in your heart, you do not talk about organizing for brotherhood; you do not talk about belief, you do not talk about division or the powers that create division, you need not seek reconciliation. Then you are a simple human being without a label, without a country. This means that you must strip yourself of all those things and allow truth to come into being; and it can only come when the mind is empty, when the mind ceases to create. Then it will come without your invitation. Then it will come as swiftly as the wind and unbeknown. It comes obscurely, not when you are watching, wanting. It is there as sudden as sunlight, as pure as the night; but to receive it, the heart must be full and the mind empty.
