I don't think that they are synths, I haven't heard the excision tune but in rutten it is sampled as far as I know. Finding some flute samples could do the trick, or for best results record a real flute playing. I imagine that rutten is a recording of a flute playing the whole melody, rather than built up of samples - it sounds like it has too much articulation to be made of single flute note samples.

This is off the top of my head, so it may not sound great...

Start with a sine wave.

Mix in some white noise from a second oscillator. The white noise volume needs to be fairly low.

Assign an ADSR envelope to the white noise volume. Set a fast attack on the ADSR, with a medium/fast decay. This should emulate the 'chiff' sound at the beginning of each note. The white noise should be louder at the beggingin of each note, falling away quickly as the note sustains.

Next, simulate vibrato with an LFO assigned to the master pitch bend. If your synth has the facility, assign an ADSR to the LFO depth control. Set a medium to slow attack on the ADSR controlling the LFO depth. This will allow the vibrato to develop slowly over the length of each note.

Finally, set the synth to mono and hike up the portamento time a little...

Er, that should do it. Or just use a soundfont sample of a flute...! :)

EDIT: I just made the sound following my guide. It sounds shite! :(

Give this a shot, although I don't guarantee the results being perfect...

Start with a square wave.

Pass it through a low pass filter and assign an ADSR envelope to the filter cut-off.

Set an instant attack, and medium fast decay, no sustain and no release on the ADSR.

Pass the audio through either a formant filter, vocoder or a VERY tight reverb (small size, and short decay). These will give you that slightly artificial vibe.

Sequence in your notes playing different length notes for the 'bubbly' effect.

can anyone make the bass in this i just cant seem to get anything as thick and creamy as this its driving me insane. I have got everything nailed up untill the point of the distortion like ive got all the little weird bits sorted out, its just that thick tone, either everything i make sounds to muted or sounds to trebley and raspy, so how do you make those creamy distortions. This goes out to users of ohmicide, starting with two squares with detuned against each other

Pad that comes in at 2:28..

That pad can be listened to over and over and over and over again - headhunter outdid himself just on that one sound..Its so whiney but so mellow at the same time..

This is on Page3 and still hasn't been answered

Bit of help guys! I'm using the ES2 inside Logic 8 for basses, and very new to creating my own sounds on soft synths.

How does he get the harmonics in this? It's just horrible.
