Just finished another track, my 2nd one. tips as usual are appreciated.

another sick review from those awesome review guys would be appreciated very much also xD
aaaaaaallllllllllrighty then

DubSac - "Faces of War"

props:
+i can always get down on some violence themed dubstep haha
+so the beginning ambience is good, in theory (elaborated below)
+those break notes into the ambience are harshly awesome (0:43)
+(1:11-1:23) that automation is killer, feeds off the machine-gun sounds.. got that "ratatatatat" sound to it
+really, those breaks could make people lose their minds
+kinda reminds me of something Benga would throw at you when you least expect it

advice:
-i think you need some stronger, more authentic samples to start the track off. unless youre using synths to replicate the sounds, which is interesting, but really it comes off as cheesy to me.
-throw some sines on it! needs to shake my face if its gonna remind me of battle
-synths could use a little richness overall, really, maybe thru multioscillators or FM mods, something along those lines would bring the pain
-ambience sounds a little dry, overall, the kicks have a nice timbre but no oomph
-toss some high freqs or a crash at that first drop to really smash heads

overall:
=gives me a nice solid oldschool feel, really reminds me of Benga, who was one of my original heroes.. so you're definitely on the right track. spice those ambient war samples at the beginning up and the sample into the drop will have a lot more effect.
:w:

thanks alot man. ill try some of that stuff for sure

Hi all,

First i wanna introduce myself since i'm new on this board. I'm a guy from Belgium and i'm only recently started producing (about 3 months ago). I managed to get something 'finished'. (still needs some mastering, and finetuning but i'm still a noob at that). So i decided to give it a shot and post something on here to get som good constructive feedbacks.

I use FL studio 9, Massive, Albino3, shitload of fx plugins,...

Here it goes:

Just a very dark dubstep tune with a grungy wub
I like this!

Just my opinion, hope it's useful:
props;
+ love the synth on the background, really goes well with the bassline
+ sounds are pretty filthy and raw, but in the break the background synth unburries itselffrom filthyness which creates a really good contrast. i like!

tips;
~ in the break i'm almost hearing a piano playing, i think some chords will add up nicely to the dark atmosphere of the track.
~ the growl can come from a bit deeper if you get what i mean. or boost up the lows a bit on it.
~ the clap should be a bit more snappy than the snare is.

Reaaally nice atmosphere in this one.

props;
+ very creative with the same melody in different octaves/synths and delays!!
+ lovely sub, good fit!
+ beat fits perfectly imo. the rimshot with reverb makes it blend with the synths real nicely

tips;
~ after the beat kicks in the (melody) synth that you start with gets a bit burried under, not sure if this was on purpose tho
~ would love to hear a break :-D

Welcome! Enjoy the boards :)

some constructive feedback on your track:

props;
+ at the beginning, the kick with the sub directly following after (was it sidechained?) is just sick! love it!!
+ good placement on the effects and other samples!

tips;
~ at 0:38 you take a 'run up' with the kick, i think you better make a 'run down', to build up the tension. Weird explanation probably, hope you understand lol. later in the track (2:06) i hear it coming back again, i also think a rund down is more approperiate there.
~ probably a second break will fit in well, and make it more ambient than the first one
Blue Patterns wrote:yay embedding capabilities! :)

Soundcloud
go to say, though i find this 'alternative' sound very interesting, i'm not too fond of it. i find it hard to relax on such tunes =D nothing personal though!

props;
+ good intro!
+ that's some really creative sampling there!
+ nice melodic harmonies

tips;
~ after the intro, the transition is a bit too sudden.

Big up to abakus and all others who show me love... :!: :!: :!: much love back at 'cha

Got a new track up on my myspace called "Destiny"

it was formerly called "BuriedAlive", because to write it i put myself in the mindset of those who were trapped under rubble in Haiti for up to six days before rescue... and those that werent, that just lay there crushed, waiting to die... i changed the name because it just seemed a little insensitive to me. the new title isnt meant to say those that died were meant to die, but i wanted it to reflect the chaoticness of life as we know it

Needless to say, its not for the weak hearted. :| But those that appreciate the brutality that dubstep can provide will enjoy this track. please have a listen. http://www.myspace.com/BaronRogue

second song in player :e:

much love/respect, ill get to reviewing the tracks on this page! 8) :w:

YESYEYS YYYEYEYSYSYYYYYYYYESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS BOYS!!

Taking a quick herbal cigarette break from the lab, so here is some feedback for my man Tripwire22 :t:

(as these are both WIP the reviews are slightly shorter than normal....)

Long trail (WIP):

Props:
+Intro synth is a winner. Loved how it reminded me of some of the older breakbeat stuff by Boabinga. Nicely worked.
+Intro hats have a good shuffle.
+Conga/Bongos in there are a nice touch. Reminds me of some Digital Mistkz stuff. They work esp well with the hats.
+@1:23 strings (guitar or sitar?) work nicely and add a nice new dimension to the track. Definately use the string sample to good effect later in the track. Its a class melody and will give the song a lot of identity.
+Kicks and snares compliment each other well.

Advice:
-Vocal sample is a bit out of place. Is it someone talking backwards in a strange language. It also seems a bit too drawn out to have just before the drop. A shorter punchier sample here would be top class.
-Occasional metallic sounding snare doesnt do anything for me. Seems to take away from the groove. Perhaps change the sample? Or I might be inclined to get rid of it altogether. The beat is class without it.

Overall:
A good start to what Im sure will be a wicked track. Just ditch the weird snare :lol: and make sure you make good use of that lush string sound. Cant wait to hear the finished article.

Sector 7 (WIP)

This one is straight from the streets of Junon!! (I love FF7 :D )

Props:
+@15 sec the second synth that comes in here is a nice touch. Its all about the different layers in chilled tracks like this. This is a textbook definition of how to do it.
+@28 sec I want to marry this bass drop and have beautiful fat bassy babies with it :lol: Sounds fat and solid but doesnt run away with the track and swamp everything else.
+@54 sec Kicks come in nicely and add a ton of groove. This has me nodding my head straight away.
+Superd synth work gives it that spooky/ff7/anime type vibe.
+The two wood block snares work well together. The two working at different pitches gives a cool almost garaey shuffle to the piece. Compliments the kick well.
+ Liking the mix. Best word to descibe it?................Sexy.

Advice:
- Hats (sounds like a faint "beep" noise) need to be either louder so they can be heard as part of the beat or taken out altogether.
- Make sure there is at least two more bass drops in this track. The bass is too cool to be denied the chance to come to the fore once in a while.

Overall:
Takes me back to being 16 playing FF7 and smoking bongs in my mates bedroom....... Liking the overall vibe so far. The kicks and snare are pretty much done so you are really just left to work out how to keep the vibe going for another 3 mins. Shouldnt be a problem but I ould keep the idea of variation at the front of your mind. I know from experience that tracks like this can get stale after a couple of minutes if left in the wrong hands.......... Again cant wait to hear the final result

Peace :e: :w: :e:

Not for the weakhearted :lol: nah not really! serious shit knell, i hope every1 has a listen to that. Earthquake right there.
Neway, my reviews a bit more critical than usual but i had a bad day, got home cold n hungry, so don't take it personal :w:

BaronRogue - Destiny (demo)

00:01: u sure about that kik? lemme get back to it below.
00:13 + 00:19: lovely how u go up for the ending of those synth phrases. Hard to end a phrase like that sometimes, u hit the right note 4sure.
00:14 - got a red light here pal 00:24 too) (coupla others too, but it's demo right so i'm gettin into the boring stuff too soon)
(erm, stop press, i'm gettin loudsa redlights in "Time ToRUN" now, n i don't think they were yesterday, so maybe Firefox or MySpace are being silly... )

00:51: yeah yr vibey synths are nicer than last time
00:58 + 01:05 etc. - yeah, feelin that rapidly repeated mid-range fart., and the space u give it.
01:22 - THAT SUB! RIGHT THERE! best bit of the whole tune! perfect timing, delicious timing.
01:56 etc. yeah this whole break>drop>final section is tuff. Fckin deep man. Just gave it 3rd listen, and there's more to discover each time. U packed a shtload into yer 3mins. Intense.
02:05 more cool timing with that cut to the formant/throat
Aaag! and 02:24! U got me man, gwaan! i'm grinning, love it.
03:00 - cool 3min ending, funny (plus the rides bringing it up) my kinda dumb sht 4sure. Keep it.

mate, i got to say, i don't think it's yr best track yet tbh. Funny to say this but just about every bass/ midrange/FckinLoudNoise in there has got a great sound... except the lead. i mean i'm not feelin that main electric guitar thing yet. Maybe it's just a matter of tweaking the distortion on it, or putting it an octave down or even up, dunno but i think u could make the whole tune a lot bigger by workin just on that sound for a bit, cos it's a biggy, and all the other wonky bits that play along with it are all good to go. Just me tho bruv, someone else is gonna hit u back and say it's the best noise they ever heard so hey keep it if u like it

I mean that too about the other wonky bits - some full-on sounds in there all finished and absoloutely fckn mental too. Plus u got a proper DJ's sense of timing, so they all sittin well together (although i can hear them complainin they got crammed into a 3min tune. Not their fault.) Ah Wow. I just remembered what u said about getting stuck in the earthquake. Deep. I'd forgotten when i typed that last bit.

The finished piece is gonna be devastating. Respect.

Right, this is what i wanted to ask about that kik, cos i was listenin to somethin else on myspace the other day, and the kik alone was right up to the top of the green lights on the EQ, before any bass or anything, which is pretty much what your kik is doing there. Well, what's bugging me is that i read around the other PRODUCTION threads that drums should sit at about -10db to -8db. I've been tryin to do that since i read it, but tbh i'm scratchin my head a bit when i hear all this loud sht out there. Maybe it's just a new style and it's got new rules. Any replies welcome... (but pls don't quote this whole essay, ta :mrgreen: )

JFK wrote: Advice:
-Kicks sound a little flat to me. They could do with some more sub behind them. Try layering a kick from an 808 to give some real power.
-Snares need to be a lot higher in the mix. Also needs more body and reverb. Again, layering a more organic snare underneath will add a lot of smack. Remember that there isnt many snares in your average dubstep track so they need to be BIG.
-@1:36 the sub bass clashes with the kicks and muddys up the mix quite badly here. To stop it happening either side chain the kick to the bass so the bass ducks out of the way when the kick occurs or high pass the kick at the same frequency you low pass your sub at. This lets the two beathe together and you get the benefits of both without the muddy mix.
:z: not aiming this at anyone particular (specially not knell with yer earthquake business) but it's worth a bump.
More gold in the other PRODUCTION threads, people
btw I'm just beginning at all this aswell, so not tryin to big myself up, just wanna hear more good music fill the world :e:

JFK I listened to your newest tune and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of Amon Tobin, Burial and ambiance in general so it's definitely "my type" of music. The bass is absolutely awesome, the way it pulsates is really atmospheric. And the cymbal/vox interaction is really cool too. Digging the creative sampling for the drum beat and your general use of re sampling too. Got nowt in the way of criticism except send some promos to Hyperdub or Ninja Tunes or someone :) I really think its that good...

This is a good tune simplicty comes to mind but in a good way.

It isnt overbaring where your being distracted by other sounds which i like.

The lead is good but to contradict my earlier statement maybe a couple more sample hear an there to make it bounce along would be a step forward but not essential.

The bass is good but would of liked a bit more variety.

All in all a qaulity tune, a head nodder i would say, maybe not a banger but this maybe isnt to my tastes but I know a good production and a well thought out tune when i hear it.

(Please dont take this a negative I think this is a good tune :mrgreen: )

Big up
