I've asked this before, everyone says "sidechaining" like it's obvious...I'm pretty sure I have a basic idea of what sidechaining is, but I don't understand how just straight up "sidechaining" will get me that sound...

An in-depth answer from someone who has a mo would be MUCH appreciated

Thanks
Well, he clearly uses sidechain compression to get that sort of "pumping" feel to the bass. Make a light, air type synth (no better way to describe it..) and look up a tutorial on sidechain compression. *
Mute the trigger (f.ex a kick) so you don't hear it, only the effect (the compression). Play around with when you want it
to come in etc. :)

Sidechaining is when you set up a separate track, for instance one playing a kick rhythm, and then you set your compression on your synth to sidechain through that track, which means whenever the kick on the other track is
triggering copmression on your synth which gives a pumping and slow attack type sound. For the actual bass, a simple electro type saw with some distortion layered with a sub and something with high end, such as strings will sound nice :)
hope this helps better
One more question:
So I use Logic...I should just basically set up a kick to the rhythm that I want the synth to be pumping at, then add compression to the synth, then, in the compression I select send to kick?

Sorry if this is an experience similar to teaching an kindergartener, I usually don't have half this much trouble with a concept...I feel like I ALMOST got it :u:

Hope this helps you understand ;)

The main bassline in this tune please, just sounds so old school and gritty! No idea where to start with it though :( Such a good tune and label

Just a suggestion, may be way off with this one. Take a saw wave (or two) and run it through ohmicide. Crank up the gain on the smart distortion thing to full. Then apply a EQ and make some big cuts around the sound. As I said, could be waaay off.

3:15 - 3:17

There is a funky sort of beep sound that I want directly between 3:16 and 3:17, just right after the funky guitar and before the bass wub.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xQ7ZnUirAo

How would I get that sound, please?
Keep progressing, one day you'll be great. :)

I dont have any particular need to make the sound but im interested in how this bass is made. I have tried to make it in three ways, one where I tried to make it as a sort of stab (I think that is the term), two where I tried heavily distorting a kick drum and three where I layered a stab on top of the kick. The third way sounded closest but not close enough.

I'm really new to sound design so my ways of trying to replicate it may be completely retarded, sorry.

Check out youtube for some tutorials on making a dutch house synth lead. And then with some distortion you should have a very similar sound.

Check out the lead synth, starting at 0:55. Really digging the sound, can anyone help me replicate it in NI Massive?

Whats up guys. I need some help making a rather... "simple" sound?

I want to learn how to make those really DEEP wubs. Ive kind of fallen out of my "OMG ITS SO FILTHY" phase and into the more deep, dark and underground side. And for some reason I can't get this right. The kind of sound I'm talking about can be heard in this track.

If it helps I'm using logic/massive

Ye big old school tune, love geddeon.

Sine frequencies sounds

in massive, 3 osc, sin-triangle, sin-square, sin-square 1

like detuned 2 octaves, but little semitone differences aswell, lowpass 2 filter, and double notch filter in filter 2, and you can get some gritty sound by using
the P shaper, but it's important in massives EQ, have the boost to full, this pull out the mid range sine sound that you hear right up

How can I create modulation like this over a reese bassline? A lot of people say it's just 'pitching down', but it's obviously a lot more than that. Is it LFO modulation, a clever way of pitch bends? I've been trying to figure this out for months... I can make a descent reece but can't modulate it like this...

Thanks in advance for any in-depth help :)

---- The modulation/reece that I'm talking about comes in at 1.30mins in :)

I see this bass alot. how? I know it has alot to do with the relationship with the sub which seems to have some sort of post processing or iono? I'm using reason and I know these guys use reason as well. any help hints would be awesome.

Another way to get this effect is by getting a plugin called CamelPhat and inserting it on the track, once you've done that, turn off everything in the plugin except for the "LFO" and "Master" sections, change the "target" to "MasterVol" (right at the bottom of the drop down menu) and change the shape to "Ramp Up". Then all you need to do is change the rate and depth to taste.

Of course this only works if you want a constant pumping rhythm rather than one that changes with your kick pattern, although I'm sure with automation/clever bypassing you could work that out. It's basically just assigning an LFO to the volume, which is practically what the sidechaining would do if you set it up how these guys said, but instead of having the volume controlled by the kick sound, it's controlled by the shape you determine in the "Shape" menu. Once you've got that nailed, play around with the distortion and filter in there, can make your sound a lot more interesting!

The way I have gotten close to this sound was opening up an instance of massive.
turn on all three oscs and set them all to saw.
Detune the first two to -10 and +10 and put set the 3rd osc to -12.
Low pass filter 4, full cutoff, very low resonance
Dimension expander to taste
Voicing tab pan position slider all the way to the left. Turn it on.
That's the sound, but to get the pumping sound,I used sidechain compression. Side chain it to a "ghost" kick and set the threshold on the compressor down to -31.5db, I use ableton so I have no clue about the other DAW. Ratio at 4.74. Knee to taste. Cut out all the lows and then boost some of the highs and you should be golden :h:

edit: when I said lows I meant evyerthing below 80 hz for room for your sub

trying to make the 'percussive' synth that comes in with the wobbles.. hits at 1:01 for the first time, really the best way i can describe it

i've tried my hand at it, thought it would be something along the lines of a square, possibly modulated, with a cutoff envelope with a pretty quick attack and sharp release, but i havent been able to get anything that is as clean and hits as hard.

any thoughts? cheers
