By far my favorite television show of all time. Season 1 > 3 > 4 > 2 > 5 for me. Five was kinda a trainwreck. Seemed like they were rushed to finish it or something. The whole McNulty stunt was bs and all the characters dying was kinda disappointing. I know that was sorta the point but I don't think they needed to kill ALL of the good characters.

As far as my favorite characters:

Omar - best television character of all time. Everyone raves about his "moral code" and that's why they loved him. Fuck that. I liked Omar because he was a beast that survived on his own. Omar was a one man army and was more powerful than the entire Barksdale organization. I also like the irony that he was the strongest, most badass, most macho character, and he was also gay.

Bodie - bodie was just a fuckin g and very likable. His death was definitely the saddest moment of the series IMO.

Bubbles - loved his story. Similar to Omar in that he did everything on his own, relied on nobody. Although they both had a few stray friends (or in Omar's case, boyfriends) here and there. But they were just periphery to their characterizations. Bubbles was a very deep character and showed the microscopic effects of the themes David Simon was trying to portray.

Stringer - stone cold business man. I loved what he represented, especially in contrast to Avon (although Avon was also very likable). Stringer saw reality for what it really was. Avon didn't. Avon just wanted things to stay the same. He wanted his corners. Stringer understood that there was no reason to keep killing each other. He was the criminal version of Bunny Colvin. All throughout the series, Simon created these dichotomous characters that represented conservatives vs progressives. The conservatives wanted to keep the endless and pointless drug war going so that they could exploit it in their own way, while the progressives wanted to change things for the better. They had a vision for the world. And the ultimate tragedy of the show was that their vision could never be realized. I'll never forget the quote when Avon said to Stringer "You know the difference between me and you? I bleed red and you bleed green. I look at you these days, String, you know what I see? I see a man without a country. Not hard enough for this right here and maybe, just maybe, not smart enough for them out there." Stringer wanted to transcend the streets, and create a legitimate business and a better world where drugs could be sold without people dying.

Other examples of conservatives vs progressives besides String vs Avon are McNulty vs. Rawls/Burrell, Bunny Colvin vs Rawls/Burrell, Carcetti vs Royce/Davis, Prop Joe vs Marlo/Cheese, Bodie vs Marlo in a way, and of course, Gus vs Whiting/Templeton. Gus of course is David Simon's realization of himself. The Wire is basically one big fuck you to the Baltimore Sun and conservatives.

Tommy Carcetti - another great character. it was too bad his vision for baltimore could not be realized either.

Michael Lee - I could really relate to this character and his life circumstances. It was really sad to see him grow up and get bigger in the game. It was clear that he was driven by the terrible problems at home that were affecting him.

And finally, Clay Davis - just because of the way he said "Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiitttttttt".

What I meant was if they were in a war (and they sorta were), Omar would win. He was a master at lying low. Yes Avon owned more territory and had more men, but Omar could probably have assassinated Avon if he wanted to. But then he'd have nobody to rob from, so....

Yeah but he coulda done it without them. No matter how bad shit got for Bubbles, he could keep trudgin. What I meant wasn't part of an institution. He was a loner.
