I sold my sub, and I was devastated. Really was. Kinda stopped producing for a while, was like driving and not being able to see out the windshield. But really.

Okay guys!
Like I've written before, the D5's are what I want, you convinced me to get them, they cost a fortune in sweden tho.
BUT! I found a pair of used ones for about 600 bucks including shipping which is about as cheap as it's gonna get!
Should I get these now while I can, or just a pair of HS 5's for like 400-500?
I know everyone thinks D5's are bang for buck, but are they still worth it if they cost 600 instead of 389?
Also, are they a bit hyped or is that just a rumor?
Stereo imaging, reverb tails and all that stuff is supposed to sound great but if they are hyped they still won't translate that well, so is that true, how do your mixes translate guys?
Sorry for spamming you guys about this, but I don't trust alot of other people on the internet and the few friends I have who make music are metalheads with hifi speakers that use audacity so I have to rely on you.
Please <3 <3 <3 !?

I dont know if they maintain that bang for buck factor at 600, but I still think they will beat the pants off of Rokits (as that was my personal experience). I also think they have an edge over most entry level monitors you were looking at. Specifically in the mid range accuracy and stereo image.
In what way did you hear they were hyped? I know a lot of people are really excited about them. But shit for the price in the US, who wouldnt be excited? But I dont feel like there are any frequencies that are out of place. They are the most clinical monitors I have worked with. And I have gone rounds with entry level Yamahas, Mackies, Berhinger etc (all in other peoples bedroom studios and listening at music shops) I owned and worked on Rokits 6 G2s for three years before upgrading to the D5s and a year later I still firmly stand my ground that the kick the shit out of Rokits for mixing in a home studio situation. I will be dealing with adding a sub sometime soon more than likely. I think my mixing is better than ever, but being able to here the sub frequencies will make less guess work I am hoping. Probably going to try and sort my weird ass mixing space as well.
I think the thing to understand is there are plenty of 1k monitors that sound better in all likelyhood. At 600 dollars you could also look at some Adams. Their easily could be better monitors you could get at 600, I just dont have a lot of experience with better monitors (yet).
Not trying to confuse you here, just saying : )

Yeah. Well, that's the thing, for 600 I'd still have to compare them with all other 600 speakers and waste even more time.fragments wrote:I dont know if they maintain that bang for buck factor at 600, but I still think they will beat the pants off of Rokits (as that was my personal experience). So, today, I just got the Yamaha MSP5a's used. I think they're usually like 5-700, I got them for 200. Great deal right?
I have no perception of if they even sound right, everyone I've talked to online says that the MSP seires are great, and most say they're better than the HS series which I was looking at getting for double the price.
The monitors aren't set up yet, it's in the middle of the night, I'll do it tomorrow.
I listened to one of them though just straight into my computer, and, even though I figure that's the way it is with monitors, I hated the sound compared to my hifi speakers. Probably perfectly normal really, but when switching between them it was like... wow. No highs. No bass.
But they're supposed to translate well and that's what I care about. Hope I get satisfied!
Also theyre like 30cm under my head right now, I'll have to get stands but those damn izoacoustic stands cost like a hundred bucks, wtf!
Hope I did the right thing.

Even if you didn't do the right thing, you can still have a profitable experience from the whole thing.

My little studio. Next on the list is a proper desk and a bit of room treatment.

Next things on the checklist are a desktop, room treatment and better monitors

Is it because it's felt more than it is heard maybe?nowaysj wrote:That is so significant though... I don't get people being okay with not being able to hear a very important frequency range. Just don't get it.

Old set up at my parents house:

New (Much Better set up at my Apartment)
Though my girlfriend isn't always happy about the spare bedroom being "MY" studio space

Notice the VIRUS, That thing is my baby!
Sound Proofing makes a tremendous difference. Especially in a room not meant for sound design.
