jrisreal wrote:@Jizzman very nice idea. Drop section is a bit empty. Strong, but empty...or perhaps, too distorted.

@narrator needs more melodic implementation IMO, but its pretty funky and filthy. Its definitely a cool track.

@jclarkeiv its a good idea. Nice piano playing. Not enough high end and not very clear. Also its repetitive. Needs better drums, too.

@mr_ooze oh thats clean! Drop section is repetitive though and kind of annoys me.

@atticuh I like it! Nice track choice for remixing. Drums are well done, but the drop is really empty of anything other than drums and vocal. Get a pad in there, maybe a lead or a bassline or something...just my two cents.

@WeAllDie Really dig the intro, but the drop section doesnt make any sense to me whatsoever. It would be in your best interest to incorporate some parts of the general melody into the drop section...would make the track much more understandable. Basslines are also unclear, maybe get some good eq'ing done to fix that up.

K, heres mine. So far, it's DnB, but I'm going to bring it down to halftime in the drop, so I guess its both. Looking for a vocal acapella to fit it (any suggestions appreciated).

Thanks for the feedback, right now everything I make is intended for a nerdcore project with a friend of mine so I suppose it should be viewed as a hip hop track. Deltron 3030 heavily influences the project, anyone who hasn't heard it should check it out. Essentially what I'm saying is there will be vocals in the track. My friend who is righting the lyrics has some seriously ridiculous shit, I will definitely throw up the track once I get vocals on it. As for the drums, I agree they are fairly plain. Once I get some time to work at home (most of this track was actually produced at work when I had some downtime) I will work more on mixing the drums up. My apc40 allows me to more easily mix up the drums and give it a more natural feel. Again thanks for the feedback, I'm at work now so I can't access soundcluod but will check out your track when I get home tonight.

jrisreal: tasty bass and nice flow. it would sound mental with some delay patterns on that squelchy synth at 1:06 and go really well into the halftime drop. Can't wait to hear more

gisdupfilthymigrant: Needs more dissonant notes in the intro. but I love the drop! Try filtering the fader back and forth between the high pitched and low pitched synth at 2:28-ish.

filtroniks: Best song I've ever heard using that Bmm-tza-Bmm-ta beat. I always expect silly spanish music haha but that was dope! and That slap bass is straight freshh funk.

This is what I've been developing recently. Got the idea for the second drop yesterday, but I want to change it up more with some sq bass sounds.

Hey all, does anyone want to exchange some feedback over aim? I can't post stuff in this thread anymore because of label secrecy and stuff, but I'm in need of some feedback from people I don't know haha

FluidMoShun: honestly i dont know how to critique this song as i dont think id ever listen to something like this and i cant say ive heard something like it before. i guess that's good. i like the oldschool synths and the melodies are pretty sick. the drums sound like you recorded them live which would also be pretty cool. uh.....yeah idk what else to say.

travis baker: i think all of of them are great. the first one, barmen, seems finished. in boka tuna the drums arent really loud enough for me. faulty shunt is nice too i love that kind of dark 2-step stuff.

jrisreal: i can tell when you finish it that it's gonna be a really nice track. um, toward the end of that the drums started getting quieter than the rest of the track? also for the intro i wouldnt want to reveal the sub before the drop like that buut thats just me. and something else i'd do would be to add some white noise rises or stereo sweeps or reversed cymbals through this. really adds to the liquid flavor that you seem to be going for!

___

here is my uh "WIP" thing. every time i try to make a dark dubstep song i usually give up or hate myself after listening to one of youngsta's mixxes but i felt like i improved with this one.

here's what i got so far

The drums get quieter because I'm fading them with reverb to make that part softer. I almost always some sub in the intro...thats just how I do it, I guess. And thanks for the suggestion about the risers and sweeps...definitely. And thank you for the compliments.

Btw your track is very nice, don't you dare scrap it!

here is some feedback :D

Bliptech - Nice intro, that got mi interested, but when it drops, it needs more bass. sounds are nice, but they are only mid and high freq. you have plenty of space for some sub and bass to make it heavy. without it, it sounds like there is hi-pass filter.

keine - one of best dark dubstep songs i have heard maybe you can get more inspiration from Biometrix - paranoia

Fluidmoshun - make it less chaotic

c-e-s

some nice drum work, the snare sound a little too weak though, and the bass line gets repetative. The bass sound its self could do with something to make it more interesting.

sampletank

like the nintendo style sounds in there, nice variation, not really my kind of tune but good still,

acrap

like kikaruu said with the bit @ 48 seconds, good build up at the beggining built tension well, good ideas with the main synth but seems to lack that little bit of grittyness,
not keen on the 2nd main part of the tune, the first bit has got some real potential although i would say the main synth is bit ear piercing.

in the crowd,

your bro is right, finish it, got cool vibe to it lovin the drums

please check this wip out and let me know what you think,

its on the soundcloud called open up your eyes,

thanks in advance guys

kiene - Awesome shit man. The pad creates the exact amount of tension and atmosphere for this track.

jrisreal - I really like that man, can't suggest anything really. Really enjoyed it.

sunshaft - Nice basses in there, the variety amongst them really works. Not too sure about the fade in intro, it's a badass track, it could do with a little more there. Personal taste maybe though.

Here's my latest work in progress. Once again I have swithced from my usual dark, ambient style and tried to make...well something. Yeah, so any and all feedback / critique is appreciated. Cheers.

@DJ Sampletank: still kind of dark and ambient but with a hardcore edge, kind of cool, but not really my thing tbh, I like your other stuff more.I suggest making your drums a bit harder, maybe faster too if that's the direction you want to take it.

@Stinjee: Sounding good mate, not too sure about the open up your eyes sample but everything else is sounding pretty sick, mix down is very good you should be happy with it :)

@Sunshaft: Very cool man, intro is sick kind of reminds of halo for some reason, after the drop imo the tune would sound better without the craoky wuup sound on the lead, it sounds a little out of place, maybe that's just me.

my turn :) pls comment..

@Sampletank - Not sure if this helps, but some of your sounds don't really add anything to the track. Just my opinion but the miscellaneous sounds are better used as punctuation. Interesting song though, I like it.

@Stinjee - Put a second or two of space in the beginning of the track. I couldn't hear the first "open". Song sounds pretty sick though, very thick and grimy. After about 3 minutes I kind of lost interest, as the tune didn't seem like it had changed much.

@Sunshaft - Sounds good to me, actually I'd be really interested to hear how you made some of those wobbles, specifically the "yayaya" sounding one. I like your transitions, it keeps the song from getting repetitive.

This is my current W-I-P. Definitely would love some feedback, because I'm very new to music production and dubstep. My first post on the forum, actually! Anyways cheers hope you enjoy it.

@Tyler J: Musically, it's a pretty cool piece. The structure of the song is a little screwy, but if you're more interested in production I think the first thing you should research is proper EQing. I'm definitely no expert, but I'd probably tone down your kick a little since It sounds like it's interfering with the bassline, and possibly boost the upper mids on the guitar/synth so it gets through the mix better.

@ibscotty: diggin the drum samples. this is a pretty open ended piece so I don't really have any criticism. as far as ambience goes, you pretty much nailed it. song-wise, though, it gets pretty repetitive. dynamics are always a good way to add variation without having to actually change anything.

@DJ Sampletank: you got some fuckin sweet sounds man. not really feeling the drums, though. I suck ass at producing nice drums, but the snare seems a little overpowering. nothing wrong with the beat really. Interesting composition, pretty cool overall.

My WIP is kind of half-assed near the end, I'll admit, but it was fun just experimenting. Let me know how you like it! The sample is from some Vivaldi concerto for two cellos, RV 531 to be exact. An awesome song by itself.

Clappa - Dr Pepper [2-Step/Dubstep]

Post by MrAural » Mon Nov 21, 2011 12:38 pm

@ibscotty I love the vibe you got going there. Really chilled... I think I'll listen to this later again :D

@Sonic Arts Love what you've got going, the hip-hoppy beat and the bass suit each other unusually well.

@DJ SampleTank That's pretty sick bro. Love how you've used 3xOSC :P

Here's mine, I was going for a 2-Steppish dubstep tune, here's what happened..

ibscotty - Cheers for the input man. Your track is great man, great chilled vibes. Drums have the nice, slightly glitchy, off beat feeling which helps with the vibe. A little on the repetitive side. Aside that, really nice so far.

Tyler J -
Cheers for the input. As for your track - I agree with sonic arts, melody wise, instrument wise and structure wise it's real nice, just a little more production would get this bangin. Also like he said, look in to Eq and shit (there is a lot of good stuff on this very website.)

Sonic Arts - Cheers for the feedback. As for your track, it's pretty badass. Reminds me of a toned down Venetian Snares. This would sound awesome with some vocals on it. The part with the electro-y bass is nice, though the bass could be more defined.

MrAural - Link wasn't working so I hit up your soundcloud. Cheers for the feedback on my track, didn't use a 3xOSC but, I used Masive, Wonky and some audio effects etc.

kiene: man sound good. love the bell synth. and the voices/breathing, dark as fuck. i think everything fits in nicely.

tylerb: yeah im pretty much going to say what sonic arts said, work on your eqing, your ideas are good. nice work

sonic arts: i like, im not sure if it is just me or is your snare paned all the way to right? and i think the sample that you have choped is at different levels as it plays threw... not sur eif you ahve done it on purpose. nicee work any way, towards the end gets pretty interesting.
