How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
I like the last two posted, they sound nice. Anybody want to elaborate on their tech?
Here is the actual track I'm working on with this bass:

thanks man i just need a little more high end and a better mix and probably distortion everything done w/ that bass was just all in massive and some minor eq'ing. the whole setup of the track was done quite quickly i just got back from school so I will have loads of time to clean a bunch of things up. I chatted with kore on drums and stuff not too long ago and he gave me great advice same w/torquxRandoRando wrote:hypefiend thats pretty close to the "full russian" bass, i wish xkore would have used a snare like yours though, i cant stand the drums in that songs.
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
I agree with this. As I said this thread should be about the growl on Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites specifically. The rest of the growls are not as interesting. So far no one got that sound.RandoRando wrote:Why would you listen to the KORN song ? Those are simple yois you can make in massive in 5 seconds. I consider a "skrillex bass" scary monsters hnnnnngg sound, or the died this way intro. If you want the KORN song yois I have a massive patch for that
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
I have achieved the sound, using the same sound in the track above, I applied ohmicide to the mid channel only (before a bit of verb) and used the melohman to fade between various settings and it gives it the 'talking' garbly effect with mushy sounding pieces that emulate weird sounds that you can make with your mouth.
The mid-bass patch was being fed to the low channel at about 50% along with another instance of massive containing only a single sine wave oscillator and a low-pass filter with a sine LFO pitching the OSC up and down. These were both fed through Vminion with is basically a stereo filter with automation on various parameters synced to tempo, it has a preset called 'phatness' which sounds amazing on sub bass. This channel was set to 0% stereo separation since I believe that is a stereo filter as I said. I believe the algorithms in Vminion were done by Steve Duda or some such thing.
I also side-chained the mid/high bass channel with the kick and the snare (snare with a lower ratio). This helps to achieve a bit of separation between the different 'talking' sounds. The sub-bass was side-chain 'ducked' with the kick. [the sub bass was not sent to the channel with the combination of the mid/high bass, it was sent directly to the master channel]
This basically gives you a sound that you can work with (with minimal effort) to achieve all different types of the 'monster' talking mid-bass sounds that you hear in the Skrillex tracks such as scatta, scary monsters etc...

Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
I've achieved a very similar sound to yours and I don't claim im anywhere near the midrange on SMANS, because simply we aren't. I have the same problems as you (and everyone else that has tried): When we apply effects to whatever synth we are using (FM8, Massive etc) it ends up sounding washed up thanks to plugins like Ohmicide. Too much top end, not enough body on the mid/mid-high frequencies. The way the "mouth" modulations are done also sound cheap. Afaik Skrillex did it automating the actual EQ's using formant presets on Ableton but I use FLStudio so I have no idea how to go about it. All pluggins that supossedly do this with a knob only (WOW filter, TalkWah effect on FM8, etc) sound like shit.Methadose wrote:I have achieved the sound, using the same sound in the track above, I applied ohmicide to the mid channel only (before a bit of verb) and used the melohman to fade between various settings and it gives it the 'talking' garbly effect with mushy sounding pieces that emulate weird sounds that you can make with your mouth.

not made with modern talking but its unfortunate that it sounds that way i guess...the second ones actually made with granular synthesis
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
How does Skrillex use his sounds then apply them to music theory? For example the growling bass in Scary Monsters. This is a block I'm coming to in producing.
Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Make it slide on octave down, like from the key of the track and a octave down, C to C, F to F etc. the sounds in smans is the highlight if you get me, not the melodies they play

Look I respect Skrillex as a musician, but you have to understand that you cant just fucking copy his methods, people will not give a damn about you because they will be so focused on Skrillex himself. My suggestion: Just ignore this thread if you dont wanna be a music copying hipster, if you do then your just going to waste your time.

tutorials actually explain a lot of shit. Hell, i've searched countless hours on youtube learning new shit. Why must people bash it?
