My main issue with conservatives (small c, I'm British) is pretty simple. The idea that "wealth creators" (read: rich people) should be taxed less in order that they will create jobs, pay higher wages and provide better working conditions just strikes me as absolutely mental. I've worked with businessmen all my life, have owned businesses and currently work for an Investment Bank, so I'm not scared of capitalism in the slightest, but I am pretty confident that you can't rely on the rich to do the right thing any more than you can rely on the poor... if a nation wants any chance of achieving a fairer society, it has to redistribute income at source using tax and spend... it can't leave the responsibility at the door of occasional-philanthropists and the like - sure, some will always emerge, but not enough and certainly not reliably enough.

That logic underpins fiscal conservatives the world over... when it comes down to it, their policies on "today's problems", their religions, their ability to make speeches and their sexual histories are largely irrelevant. If a politician thinks about the world in terms of rich people saving the day then I don't need them anywhere near a Government building.

Also, Climax - why is it ok for you to "agree to disagree" with wub, but for everyone else to be gullibly following the liberal media conspiracy? You're not doing yourself any favours with rhetoric like that. I'm not sure if you've ever been around for political/economic discussions around here... but most people's opinions around here are actually pretty well thought out, no matter what they believe.
