TBH a decent computer a DAW and some decent cans or monitors isnt really that ghetto of a setup. But Id like to see more people just give hardware a shot, Instead of jumping right in and buying something like Komplete, people maybe give something like a BSII, Micro/Mini Brute or ESX/EMX a chance. Just to have the experience of working with some knobby hardware. Software has much better sales than hardware, but if we talking buying new...most popluar VST synths are only a 100 less than a MicroBrute.
Full agree...there has been a shift by manufacturers to making more affordable hardware the last 18months or so. Volca series, re-release of the BassStation, that Arturia mini as well etc.

The Daft Punk article I posted had a good look at some hardware alternatives.
Yes. There hasnt been a better time to try hardware. Im curious what people are going to say about the Volca series when the hype dies down and people put them through their paces in the studio. Im tempted by them, I know they would be fun (especially together) but wonder at what I will get from them that will be usable in production.

Im curious what the aftermath of the new analog craze will leave us. I dont think its peaked yet and there will be some more affordable treats on the way. Arturia really showed the way with the MicroBrute in particular. Build quality, knob per function, the amount of sound design options they crammed into a minikeys synth that you could chuck in your backpack with your laptop is astounding.

Basically my only bitch with it is there are a few random things you have to access via a software interface over USB. These controls are OS updates, but I wish they could have figured a way to have some secondary knob functions so I dont have to use software to change the MIDI recieve channel -_- or change the LFO to note reset or not....

I really wish someone would pick up on the performance oriented FX market again. Like the Electrix rack units, Korg KP3 etc. I way splurged on an OTO Biscuit because basically no one is making anything like this except the boutique people. Biscuit is pure :U: though.

It's important to remember the 808, 909, 303, etc... we're all considered "toys" at the time of their release. It wasn't until they were thrown into the trash by the "pros" that we all went suddenly acid. 8)

On another note the tune in my signature uses the Microbrute for the bassline. Dat tone bro

Interesting thought and what you say is true about those original boxes. I wasnt trying to go the whole "toy" route with my thoughts on the Volcas, its more a cost to options value for me personally. For someone else, someone wanting to try a hardware setup, ordering the trio wouldnt be a terrible introduction.

Defo want to check out your tune when I get a chance. Still loving the Micro. Got to play with mine a bit more last night.

Unless one were after the sequencer, Id probably recommend one of the new analog monosynths and just crafting your drum sounds on that. I used to be one of those "why waste time synthesizing your percusion" people...until I started making my own with a knobby analog.

Epsecially nice if you want a harmonic kick as you can just tune the thing when you make it.

Headphone amp?

But are you going to get sound treatment inside of your headphones to account for the curvature of your ear canal and shit?

Beats by Dre makes that.

I'm just gonna grow really dense ear hair for maximum diffusion.

Are you going to need some type of measuring device to monitor optimal inner ear hair length?

Maximum absorption is at 0.25 * λ init. So if you could control the grow of each ear hair individually
you could probably make a quadratic residue diffuser.

Pretty much the only way of getting high bandwidth diffusion in your ear canal.

That's a really nice sound. Always thought of the 707 as a poor mans 909 but from what I've seen it seems to be quite useful in terms of MIDI syncability and a good workhorse to add to an analogue setup.

I didn't rate the 707 until I tried one.
Best fucking clap ever, the hihats are nice too.
The kick is very good if you turn the bass up!

And yes... The sequencer is the tis!
Midi sync it with ableton/octatrack/... layer it with some other drums and jam away. It's fucking amazing
But you still pay up to 400 bucks for one.

I think a lot of the TR boxes would make nice additions to a hardware setup. But I cant imagine paying 400 for a 707 when you can get Maschine for 600 and sequence your entire setup from one workstation. I might consider it at 300 or better yet 250 ;p

Curious what the sequencers on those Airas will do. Suppose we have to at least wait for NAMM

I should have bought that 707 in the pawn shop for $100 back then. Maybe.

And I'd sell you mine.

===

Still finding that beats out of maschine are quieter. Even when I take stems out, and mix in a proper daw, they can only be pushed so far. I really don't understand why this is the case. With the renovation of the audio engine in m2, I thought this might be ameliorated. But it is not, from what I can see. I've made like 3 beats/songs in maschine, and they are all quieter, and just less sonically present.

I really don't know what it is.

Still hells of fun to use.

Is this a commonly reported issue? I havent really found this to be a problem on my system. Hell, I kinda feel like Maschine is fucking loud most of the time. Could it possibly have anything to do with your audio interface?
